Gas Gauge Hi Beam Indicator - Weird

I have a strange problem. My gas gauge works good, but pegs out past full when I turn my hi beams on. When I start the car and for the first 5 minutes or so everything works great; cut hi beams on, hi beam indicator comes on and gas gauge reads correctly. After 5 minutes if I hit hi beams the indicator does not work and the gas gauge pegs past full. After 5 minutes of driving without headlights I can turn the lights on, hit the hi beams and the gas gauge pegs and the indicator does not come on. Other indicator lights work fine. I have put some foam under the connectors to make sure there was a good connection but it didn't help.
