1999 passat timing belt lost teeth

ok my passat died on the free way.. thinking the worst we asumed the timing belt was broken removed the timing (upper) cover and discovered it was not broken however the teeth are gone.. am i still looking at the same problem? should i still expect to change the cylinder head? any advise?

Did it start up again? Any check engine lights/codes. As long as the belt is in-tacked things should still be fine their. It could skip timing but that should not cause you car to just stop. You do need to replace the belt, tensioner and water pump.
