p0171 code

Ok,today I went ahead and gutted out my airbox and now Im throwing a p0171 code which meens Im running a lean air mixture..Any idea why this would happen?Gutting out the airbox meens more air should be going in not less to make it run lean.Dont get it...1998 Ssei

Are you sure no air is getting in behind the maf, causing a lean condition? This also can happen if the pcv was recently changed and and an O ring was left out.

I did put in a new pcv valve but was about a month ago.This code only started showing up today and that was after the airbox mod I did..

Actually, that's backwards. A lean mixture has too much air and not enough fuel. So the above suggestions are spot on. Look for a vacuum leak, cracked hose, left one off somewhere, etc. The code means unmetered air is entering the engine and confusing the PCM. Perhaps debris got on the MAF after the air box mod. You can pull and clean the MAF (be very delicate) using the correct cleaning aerosol from the local auto parts store.
