Tighten Gas Cap

I have 06 Impala LTZ with the 3.9L and 41k on it. I keep getting the tighten gas cap message. I bought a new cap to replace old one and it is very tight. Is there another reason why I would still be getting this message.

Re: Tighten Gas Cap

Either the gas cap you bought is bad or there is another large EVAP leak somewhere else.

Re: Tighten Gas Cap

I do not see anything wrong with the gas cap. Where else can you get a leak on these.

Re: Tighten Gas Cap

The Evap system includes the fuel tank, charcoal canister, vent solenoid, purge solenoid, and a bunch of hoses and lines.

Check the canister vent fuse in the instrument panel fuse block. If it is blown replace the vent solenoid and the fuse. It is possible that the vent solenoid is bad without the fuse being blown as well. You can test the solenoid by removing it from the vehicle, applying 12 volts to one pin and ground to the other. You should hear it click when you apply power. With power applied you should not be able to blow through it.

Re: Tighten Gas Cap

Thanks for the help. I replaced the vent solenoid and everything is good now. The check engine light cleared itself and no more tighten gas cap message.
