Keyless entry does not work

I have a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4wd.
My keyless entry started working poorly. I changed the batteries several times and they still are not working properly. I would need to be very near the car for the keyless remote to lock or unlock the doors. I went to the dealer and they said they found a bad ground wire and thought that would fix the problem. No such luck.
Now I have to be right next to the door for the remote to work sometimes, not every time.

To add to the problem now my lock/unlock button in the drivers door is working erratic. Sometimes when I move the button to lock the doors it will work other times nothing happens. If I slam the door shut and then open it and try the button the door locks, but not always.
So to sum it up neither my keyless or my manual automatic door lock options are working properly.

3 questions.
Is this an electrical problem and will I need to replace the entire wiring system for the doors? The dealer quoted several hundred dollars for a new wiring harness, I would rather not pay this much.
Is it some kind of mechanical problem like with a relay or door lock motor?
I this a DIY repair?
Thanks.
Dan

Re: Keyless entry does not work

I'm having a similar problem. Sometimes it works, sometimes it don't. But I have some other things. The doors will lock and unlock while driving down the road, constantly. If the drivers door is open you can't roll down the window or lock all the doors, but will when closed. Also the dash dimmer control has to be turned off when I get out of the jeep or the interior lights stay on. I'm thinking there has to be a short in the wiring in the drivers door, but I'm clueless.

Re: Keyless entry does not work

I just looked at the wiring in the drivers door inside the rubber boot where the door opens and closes. The black wire and another pink one were almost completely cut into. I was able to to reconnect the both wires and my door locks and windows will now work with door open. However my interior light continues to stay on after the door is closed, and the keyless entry will not work at all now hmmm....... Any ideas anyone?
I did disconnect the battery before hand.

Re: Keyless entry does not work

You might want to try opening up the remote and taking a look at the circuit board inside. If any moisture gets inside the circuit board can get gunked up causing weird things to happen.

Sometimes you can just take an old toothbrush and clean up both sides of the board and the inside of the button pad to return the remote back to like new function.

Re: Keyless entry does not work

Check the control module in the drivers door, clean + reseat connections.
A bad window gasket can leak water, and check for wire damage between the door and body.
