Download the Toyota manual from the sticky post at the top of this forum. Forget Haynes or Chilton.

A post that sticks to the top of the forum and doesn't move down when newer posts (threads) are inserted into the forum.

(sorry, I should have provided the link)

Re: Haynes or Chiltons Repair Manual?

Note that the Toyota (as well as the Haynes and Chilton because they reference Toyota) manual we recommend has at least one serious misprint in it. The torque for the 5S-FE valve cover (head cover) hold down nuts (tube nuts) is listed at 33 ft-lbs. This is incorrect. The correct torque is 17 ft-lbs. More than one person has cracked a valve cover by tightening the tube nuts to 33 ft lbs. See page EM-57 of the manual.

Re: Haynes or Chiltons Repair Manual?

I won't necessarily argue about using the stickied manual because there is a wealth of info in there...sometimes too much to wade through. But to get an idea on how involved a repair might be before I dive in, or I just need to find a torque spec, the Haynes is handy to have in the garage. Then if something's not clear I always hit up the service manual to make sure I'm not missing anything.

The service manual is definitely better in helping to diagnose a problem.
