Unhappy brakes!?! please help!!!

Ok, first i would like to mention I am a broke nursing student so I have few bucks to get this thing fixed, so i really need to know what is wrong with it to prevent getting charges for stuff i don't need.....
I had been having brake problems for at least a month. One day I noticed the brakes were squeeking and the dash lights (trac off, service vehicle soon, anti-lock) were on. I decided to take the car to midas to get it fixed. i explained to them that i thought it was the brakes and mentioned the lights. Go figure the dash lights did not come on for them and they ran it thru the computer which turned up nothing. .....They said nothing was wrong, there was nothing they could do.
The problem got worse and the same dash lights came on most all the time. Brakes squeeked much worse, and I also noticed a squeek whenever turning right.
Finally got the opportunity to take the car to get fixed. They replaced the brake pads and the rotors. Costed like 250 dollars.
It did eliminate the squeeking. I took it to Jiffy Lube immediately after the repair to get my oil change. One of my friends who works there noticed a little smoke coming from the brakes. i had not noticed this. I mentioned that the dash lights were still coming on after the repair. He checked it on his computer for me, and it turned up no codes even tho the dash lights were on at this time. The only thing he could think of was that the dash lights could have a loose connection???
Today, a couple of times when i hit the brakes I felt this grinding feeling on the brake pedal. It was almost like it did not want to brake. The dash lights had not been on. But they came on as soon as this happened. This does not happen every time i hit the brakes. The pedal felt like a grinding or a vibration, even made a grindy noise sort of.
I know nothing about cars, but this seems pretty scary to me. What could this be??? If anyone knows please let me know!!!!!!!!!! I also need to get this thing inspected this month, but if there are problems i know it wont pass.

lights and grinding noise with "right turn" sounds like your front bearing/TRAC sensor is bad. This is a common problem in this model and costly to replace as it is recommended you will need to replace both side instead of just one. about $500 repair job.
