that lil button. . .
i think i may be asking something that i should not. . .
in any case, in my E30 i have this thing that i like to call a button. when i am driving my E30 it performs great, but if i want that litle extra boost, no matter what gear i am in, if the a/c is on, going up a hill, whatever, i just press my accelerator all the way to the button, then keep pushing then it clicks and its revs high and takes off and throws my head back. . .and makes it feel more then 168hp and 164 lb/ft of torque. .. i would venture to guess that all E30's have this, but if i am wrong please let me know. Do other bimmers have this? maybe its only on the automatics? that would be nice to have a manual and hit that button. has anyone had any experiences with the "button"? please let me know. if u dont know what im talking about, get on a straight-away and push that pedal down until it "clicks" :sun:

All automatics have that (i think)
it is called overdrive (i think) i hate it cause i drive a manual and then i drive my dad's auto car and it pisses me off cause i hit the overdrive all the time |

i believe overdrive means in an automatic there is another gear with a very low ratio to improve gas mileage

Yes you are correct, that is the deffinition of overdrive. And i do not believe this is what the button is. many car like this have an automatic overdrive, with no relation to any sort of a button.
I have the same "button" on my car. This does give a kick in the pants to my bimmer too. I only "use" it when i'm accelerating up a hill or passing.

its not overdrive its called kickdown and is only on auto boxs. it just drops a gear and gives better acceleration. watch your rev counter next time you do it

it does rev up, however i think the drop into 3rd gear is done by placing the auto tranny in sport mode. my gear box has P, R, N, D, S, 2, 1. when i place it in sport it places it in 3rd gear, since it has a more direct power transfer unlike the gas saving 4th gear. i dont think when i hit "button" i puts it in third . . .

Its the KICKDOWN function that ALL automatics have. You would experience the same accelleration in the manual version if you were to shift from 5th to 3rd and floor the gas!Your old E30 required full flooring to hit that little button to activate the transmission's kickdown unlike todays sophisticated transmissions which will drop a gear or three
at the slightest tickle of the gas pedal based on your driving style and road speed and load on engine...

I was drivin my 1987 325i down the road when I came to a red light. I was takin a right turn, but it was one of those yields instead of a full stop (either that or I shoulda been pulled over). Anyway, This 18 wheeler was comin pretty fast so I decided to gun it...next thing I know I got the pedal to the floor and he's still comin up fast. I push it a little harder and sure as shit, the little button clicks and my RPM's go up to about 4600...needless to say that truck didn't hit me
When you look under the pedal, you can see a little black button. It just knocks you down into 3rd or 2nd...not sure which. |
