I need some help figuring out exactly what parts I need to buy for my Malibu. The front passenger side wheel bearing went out, I failed to really notice that it was going out, so to me, it seems everything is pushing it's way out, the caliper is rubbing up against the rim and dug a nice little groove into it. In drive in makes a horrible racket, so I'm not sure if I need to replace the axle and all. Any insight would be helpful!! I would really like to get it running again, it's just sitting around looking pitiful! thank you!

Re: Replacing wheel bearings in 97 malibu
"wheel bearing/ hub assembly"
autozone has it starting at $78 with a one-year warranty expensive, because from the pics, it has the integrated ABS wheel speed sensor with it |

Re: Replacing wheel bearings in 97 malibu
That actually sounds cheap, compared to what I was looking at. Replacing everything I could think of on that side of the car, I had a total up to around 600.00!

Re: Replacing wheel bearings in 97 malibu
The worst case I have seen is the bearing wore into the knuckle. The most economical solution in that case was to get a used knuckle from a salvage yard. One you get things torn apart you'll get a better idea of what you need. Make sure you torque the axle nut to the proper spec after replacing the bearing otherwise you'll be doing it again in a short time.
On a side note you should be pretty surprised how quite the car is after replacing the bearing!

Re: Replacing wheel bearings in 97 malibu
When the bearings get real bad they'll cause the rotor to rub into the caliper/caliper bracket> the bearing can also wear into the knuckle. So a bad bearing can in some cases cost you a bearing, knuckle, caliper, rotor, and pads. Add those up and $600 ain't to bad. Very rarely if ever will you see one ruin a drive axle.

Re: Replacing wheel bearings in 97 malibu
yikes, then the OP has more than just the bearing to replace???
the bearing on that vehicle is easy to r & r... the main axle nut at 100 ft-lbs and 3 bearing/hub retaining bolts at 70 ft-lbs |
