Should I buy this?

http://southjersey.craigslist.org/cto/1696426449.html

I'm looking for a weekend sort of car that I can also take to work on nice days. Being able to race my friends is a must. I unfortunately don't know anything about cars. I'm a fast learner but I need something to learn on. I have 3k in cash to spend.

The reason I'm thinking something like this would be better then a new mustang is I should be able to get cheaper insurance on this and I won't have to make monthly payments to pay off the car.

Thoughts?

I'm confused as to why you want this car. Firstly you say 'weekend car to take to work on nice days', then you want something that is 'better than a new Mustang' - better how? It certainly won't be faster. It may be a 'muscle car', but the classics are more for style than for get-up-and-go. Don't get me wrong, I love them and they can lay down some seriously fast quarter-mile times, but as for a road car they aren't much to drive unless you're spending > $30K.

If you want a car for the sole reason of being faster than a Mustang, you could look up an LT1 Camaro SS from 1997-2002, that would give you about 320 hp and on the SS a better wheel/tire/suspension setup. In 2001, the SS received the intake manifold from the Z06 Vette and an LS6 clutch in manual cars, power was boosted to 325 hp. Out of the gate this would still be a close race with a 2005+ Mustang GT, but with $2500 into the Camaro it would be no comparison.

If you want a weekend 'cruiser', the Cougar you linked to would be fine, but it needs 'A LOT' of TLC.
