96 Camry sputters only at cruising speed?

Car was running great but was time for some tune-up work. Replaced Cap, rotor, and plug wires then the problem started. Only at 45mph and higher, it acts like it's running out of gas...sputters! All other speeds it runs smoothly, has great acceleration and deceleration...just when you try and maintain the same speed does this happen. Help?

If this started after changing the 3 tune-up items you mentioned, it most likely is one of those items. I would replace those items with the original parts, one at a time, to detemine which part is defective. That's assuming you still have the original parts. When I change parts, I keep the original parts in my garage for a little while, just to make sure everything is OK. Here's hoping you did the same thing.

If those check out, replace the coil.

Well now I've replaced Air Filter, Fuel Filter, Cap, rotor, Plugs and wires and the coil, Still having the issue of sputtering. Does the computer adjust the timing? Could it be a vacuum issue?
And Mike thank you for that suggestion, I will do that with the rest of the items! Too bad I had thrown the old Cap and rotor out!

Re: 96 Camry sputters only at cruising speed?

After carefully, checking all the work I had done, I discovered that one of the screws that holds the rotor to the distributor had worked it's way out and the rotor was tearing up the inside of the distributor cap. HOW on earth the car still ran...I'll never know. Thank you guys for helping me discover why I hold true to my mantra...."I'm no machanic, I hate working on cars!" I could write the "Dummies Guide to screwing up a simple Tune-Up" book!
