Exclamation 1989 camry accelarating problem

ok so it start and runs like a dream. but when i put it in drive and go it acts like it wants to bog down when shifting, its and automatic. i drive it now by shifting from 1st to 2nd then to drive and it works fine that way. what could the problem be?

could be a trans issue or a cat or a fuel issue need more information

well i bought it just last week with 220k+ miles. it has just front exhaust pipe, the rest was all rusted and in peices so thats off of the car. when you say cat, you mean catalytic? and as far as the fuel problem it does go through some gas. 1/2 tank to a 1/4 in less than a days driving. (maybe 60 miles or so)
