95 sc2 interference engine?

i have the opportunity to purchase a 95 saturn sc2 for 100.00 with a broken timing belt. i was wondering whether or not this is an interference motor, i dont want to deal with bent valves, but if i can just slap a belt on it and go... i will be all over it.

1. Saturn 1.9L engines use a timing chain, (not a belt) which should last the life of the car; provided the engine is well-maintained. These engines are notorious for heavy oil consumption due to a design flaw that is well-known among Saturn enthusiasts, but was never really fixed by Saturn/GM. I suspect that the engine was ran too low on oil for too long, thus the timing chain failure. How do you know the chain is broken? You can easily verify this by removing the cam/valve cover.

2. Yes, the Saturn DOHC engine is an interference engine. Internal engine damage has most likely occurred if the timing chain did infact fail.

If it has a busted timing chain, it will need a new timing set and the head gone through if it didn't damage a piston or two.
