Angry 1998 chevy blazer-starter

the starter spins but does not engage with the flywheel.......engine will not start? could this be the starter itself or possibly the solenoid?

Re: 1998 chevy blazer-starter

well, the starter/solenoid is sold as one unit.

try smacking it with a hammer, or a large ratchet. a few good bangs should bust it loose. that will tell you for sure if that is the problem.

or, you can take it out, which is pretty easy, and take it to autozone and have it tested. you'll be able to see if it is moving out to hit the flywheel, as it should.

Re: 1998 chevy blazer-starter

If the starter motor spins but does not engage the flywheel/flexplate, it could also be the starter drive which can also be serviced separately.

Re: 1998 chevy blazer-starter

The drive and the solenoid are two different things. The solenoid pulls the drive into the flexplate/flywheel. The drive has clutch that only turns in one direction on the starter motor shaft. If you can hear the solenoid move, (clunking sound just as the starter motor starts to spin), the drive is bad. Don't waste your time with those starter tester machines, they don't test the drive.
