1997 intrepid wont shift

hi, my girlfriend just got a car from her dad its a 1997 intrepid but it has been sitting on grass for 2 years. i got it started and running but went to shift but it was really difficult wood barely move and when it did it wood not drive so i tried to get it free and it got loose right away so im assuming i broke something i know it was stupid to force it, im a RWD chevy guy and dont know much about FWD chryslers so im thinking theres a linkage or something siezed from sitting??? any suggestions or ideas???

Re: 1997 intrepid wont shift

Its pretty common for the shift cables to freeze up on those. If the shifter moves freely than you probably popped the linkage of where it connects to the shift lever. To confirm a sticky cable you can pop the linkage off of the transmission and with the engine off on the wheels chocked to prevent the car from rolling see if you can move the lever on the trans by hand. If it moves freely than a new shift cable should take care of your problem.

Re: 1997 intrepid wont shift

Intrepid are automatics, you should mention it.
The TRS (transmission range sensor) may be rusted. It's why it's hard to move and don't shift. By forcing it, you didn't damage it (it's very solid), but I guess the clip that hold the cable jumps out of the cable. It's why it's so loose and you can't shift (bad contact).

Now what you should do, is open the hood, and put back the plastic clip on the shift cable. Use a tie-wrap to hold it in place. So it'll not jump anymore.
If I'm right, the TRS should be replaced. Or like Airjer said, it's the cable. To move the car temporally, put motor oil on the TRS to lube it. You may able to shift, but it'll not last very long, so it still needs to be replaced. If the D position doesn't work, try 1, 2 or D3.

A Windstar without having the check engine light is not a real Windstar.
