Busted Roter

I've been trying to change the breaks on my sister's ford contour for the past couple of days. I havent' had a ton of time, so I've been doing it in spurts...

The rotors are on the hub and will not come off. I spoke with several people at Auto Parts stores around the area, and I looked online to see what to do about rotors that won't budge... everyone pretty much said the same thing - if you're not keeping the rotor, put some PB Blaster on it and don't be afraid to bang on it.

So, I banged on it from both sides, using a 3lb hammer. Yesterday, after letting the PB Blaster soak in for a while, I went back, pounded on the roter - on my second or third swing, the rotor busted.

The part that mounts to the hub is still seized on, but now, the "rotor ring", not sure what to call it, but where the breakpads meet the rotor, is sitting around the hub. It's a solid ring.

So now, even if i wanted to, I can't pound it off. I know my first step is to get the "rotor ring" off, but I'm not sure how to do that. The only way it will come off is if the rest of the rotor comes off the hub... but I can't get leverage to do that. The only other way, would be to cut it in half, but i'm not sure what to use to do that...

Anyway, this is a long question, I hope it makes sense. I should've taken a picture.

You should be ably to tap the hat (the part that fits around the hub and the studs go through) from the side and get it to loosen up and eventually come off. You don't wan't to take wild swings at it, just enough to rattle it loose. with the ring broken off the hat will relax a little and it should come of with out to much more effort.

This is the technique we use quite a bit with the fords. Break the ring of the hat and the hat will usually come off fairly easily.

That makes sense.

The issue is, the ring - it's inside the hub. So the hat is seized on the hub, and the ring lose,is behind it. I can't really get to the hat to hit it from behind. Which makes me think I'll need to cut the ring. i probably don't have a way to do that, but I'm not sure what i would need to cut through a rusty rotor ring...

Thanks for your help! I wish the hit that busted the ring off would've come from behind, it would've made this easier had the ring just flown off.

You don't need to swing at the hat from behind. Just tap it from the side like you where going to remove a drum. If nothing else you should be able to swing at the ring from the back side and either get it over the hat and on the ground or get it to hit the hat while your swinging from the backside and get the hat to pop.
