2002 pontiac grand prix gtp front end clunk

i have a clunk in my front end when i bank hard with the wheels turned. my struts are new complete new struts. new sway bar, sway bar mounts, and links. both new control arms with new bushings and ball joint. new steering rack( with new inner and outer tie rods) and aligned. the only thing that is left that i think it would be is either a cv joint or either a motor or tranny mount or a subframe insulator. does anyone else know what this could be? i have two mechanics stumped as well as me.

Re: 2002 pontiac grand prix gtp front end clunk

Mine does that sometimes too. I also have replaced all the same things you have. I can feel mine the most when decellerating, with my foot on the break, and I go over a bump. I feel the whole front end clunk once or twice. It has done it since I got it with 70k, and I have not figured it out.

Same here only I've replaced the struts and mounts. Still looking in to everything else.

The front end noise, could it be something with the A-frame.

What do you mean by A-Frame? The lower control arms or subframe assembly?

In the first post the OP stated the lower control arms and bushings to include ball joint were replaced.

Based on the symptoms I'd look into the engine mounts. How about front hubs? Ever replaced? Also can you tell if the clunk sound is from the left or right side.

Re: 2002 pontiac grand prix gtp front end clunk

I thought about swapping out my trans mount to eliminate it Bob. My clunk can be felt and heard more on the drivers side, so maybe the trans mount may be the next logical step. Plus sometimes when I decellerate at a red light and if the light turns green before I come to a complete stop, when I step back on the gas, I can feel a pretty big clunk. Napa has a solid rubber trans mount for around 30 bucks I may try out.

Yes that is what I meant, the lower control arm bushings. Had a brain fart. And I did see that it was replaced.

Re: 2002 pontiac grand prix gtp front end clunk

it seems like my driver side mount is weak. if i put a pry bar in there it moves around with ease.

Can you provide a little more details as to what you did exactly with the pry bar? I have a suspicion mine are weak as well but I'm not sure how to test or know.

Re: 2002 pontiac grand prix gtp front end clunk

with the wheel off and the car jacked up, i took off the plastic shield that is on the drivers side and put a pry bar in the mount and moved it some and it seemed like there was no resistance. and the bolt that goes horizontal in the mount seemed to move apart way too much. i think thats what ruined my cv shaft because its moving too much and pulling on it

Re: 2002 pontiac grand prix gtp front end clunk

Yeah, I actually just replaced my drivers side transmission mount. I don't think I have felt the clunk since, plus the car seems to handle better.

My old mount came out and it was pretty weather cracked up and the horizontal rod that is rivited to the mount you mentioned, mine, the rivit on one side was embedded into the rubber of the mount, as if the rubber went bad and allowed the rod to move around.

I replaced mine with a solid rubber replacement from NAPA I got for around 40.00. ZZP also sells solid rubber replacement trans mounts for 49.99.

http://www.zzperformance.com/grand_p...=565&catid=138

Now I just need to get my GMPP trailing arms in and have the car aligned.

Re: 2002 pontiac grand prix gtp front end clunk

I really think mine need to be replaced. I hear the motor mounts tend to go before the tranny mounts do though.

Tim, how hard was that trans mount to replace? Could I do it? Did you do a write-up?

Re: 2002 pontiac grand prix gtp front end clunk

Yeah, you could handle it Matt, I have faith in you.

I actually opened up my drain plug, let my oil drain, and changed the mount as my oil was draining. It only took 15 minutes or so.

I don't have a write-up per say, but I am sure I could whip something together. I have to run and cut the grass though, so maybe later on tonight I will see what I can do.
