Engine Temperature Switch Location

I am having problems with my Engine temp gauge reading cold. Ive done some research and have determined its probably and engine temperature switch issue. I would like to replace the switch, however I am unsure of the location on the car. I have a 99 Ford Escort Zx2. Ive located the temperature sensor, but no luck with the switch. Any help?

Re: Engine Temperature Switch Location

Hmm... the sensor that you found is probably the "switch" that you are looking for.

If they 99 is like earlier years, there are two sensors in line between the thermostat and the heater. One of them sends a signal direct to the gauge, the other sends the signal to the computer and fan.

What are the symptoms with your gauge? Does it read low? Does it show a temp change at all or never move?

An overcooling situation could be related to thermostat trouble and is not necessarily a bad sensor.

Re: Engine Temperature Switch Location

I guess I should have explained my symptoms first. The engine temp gauge is always reading cold. I did notice the other day going down the highway that the temp gauge was moving up a little. However, it never got above the cold mark. It just looked as though it was about to work. Then fell back down to the resting position. Ill see if I can get some pictures of it.

Here is the engine gauge when the car is off

Re: Engine Temperature Switch Location

Well one of three things is happening.

1. You are low on coolant and it is not circulating properly so that the sensor can send the correct temp to the gauge.

2. The sensor is bad.

3. The thermostat or the thermostat housing is stuck open.

Your original question was asking the location of the temp sensor. You should find it in the hose between the thermostat and the heater. There may be two sensors there. You are looking for the one with just one wire.
