92 cHEV g20 van 4.3 l shifting problems - has something to do with steering column?

my van i just bought hesitates and sometimes wont upshift after it has come to a stop. my steering column seems a bit loose. i notice when i wiggle it and move it in immediatly starts working again. has ANYONE HEARD OF THIS BEFORE?? and if so what exactly is causing it? the transmission is NEW! and i know its new so does anyone know a sensor or something? or should i just replace the whole damn column which im not looking forward to. if you can help me please respond here or email me
