2001 hd2500 4x4 Shuts down while running fine

Truck will shut off and can then shake it or kick gas tank then cranks. Problem now is becoming severe. Was told they have a problem with ground wire on intank fuel pump, hope not. Gas gauge also comes and goes. Shutting off problem appeared last year then quit. I assume it is elecrical. Any help would be appreciated, thanks

the fuel pumps fail around 200,ooomi ...this is if the fuel level is kept above 1/4 ...

with your problem you must measure the fuel pressure ..53-62 psi is what it should be ...the ground wire for pump is at the frame rail...remove and clean the metal on the lug area...

also with high mileage replacing the fuel pump relay is best with any pump replacement ...a bad relay and dirty fuel filter can damage a new pump...

on replacing the pump your fuel gauge should now work correctly as it is part of the assembly.

Thanks jcat, could it be the crankshaft sensor? Truck has 90,000 miles. It`s a big block gas burner.

Since you can kick the fuel tank and get it to go again I would not suspect the CKP. If there were issues with the CKP it would light up the SES and set codes. Are there any DTC's?

Most likely the pump/electrical connection at the tank/ground at frame. The electrical connectors at the tank have been known to overheat and melt??

If you decide to replace the pump make sure it's VIN specific and a Delco/Delphi pump.

Good luck.

i agree with 777. if you can kick the tank and it gets going again i would suspect fuel pump. i have done this to a couple of cars at the shop to get them inside if it is the pump. best to replace the filter while your in there its just cheap insurance.

the crankshaft sensor has caused your problem with other vehicles ....except you hiting the fuel tank gets it going again ...this fact is in most cases the fuel pump....90,ooomi is quite low mileage for this failure of the pump ...so check those electrical connections ...running the vehicle as I mentioned earlier with low fuel run out of gas a few times its the fuel pump 99% of the time ...
