whats the loudest exhaust you can put on a 98 silverado

I want to make my 98 silverado as loud as I possible can bt it needs to pass inspection. What shud I put on?

i would say go with just a flowmaster bolt on kit, but thats just me. in indiana we don't have to worry about that .

You'll have to find out what laws are in effect for your state. Many towns also have ordinances to limit drive-by exhaust loudness...XX decibels @ YY meters away from the source, and so forth.

Now, that doesn't mean you can't design the system to be any louder...most systems are fairly quiet until you gun it, except for an open exhaust. You run the risk of getting cited for it if you lay into the gas at the wrong time or have a neighbor that is fed up with getting woken up by you starting your truck up.

Emissions are taken care of by the cat, so anything after that is sound effects. A higher flow cat will help sound slightly by reducing backpressure. After the exhaust merges at the Y, the loudest muffler I know of is a Cherry Bomb glass pack, then route it to a single or split dual ends out the back. This would probably be pushing it if not over the limit.

You could add a second muffler with a capped Y in between to open it up when you want the loudness, but close it when you need it quieter. In general, the straighter the flow through a muffler, and the smaller the internal volume, the louder it will be. A muffler with a more convoluted flow path will be quieter but also contribute to system backpressure unless it has plenty of volume to allow flow through. A tiny, convoluted muffler is like a choke...not letting the engine breathe...avoid these at all costs.

I'd suggest using pipe clamps to try out different combos then weld up once you make your choice. I'd also consult the local custom exhaust shop...they are usually very knowledgable on how the various mufflers perform. Good luck!

Take a glass pack and pull all of the insulation out of it then take a Y pipe after that for duals. Thats what i have on my truck but the insulation is still in my muffler.

the loudest would be take a 2 3/4" glass pack run a 2 1/2"pipe through it weld on both ends then weld a y in for dual outs

with a loud exhaust the cops are gonna get you ...you will pile up many tickets ....best go to the local muffler custom shop and ask questions on what they recommend ,,,they will know for sure where you live what you can get away with ...then go from there what you do..

I said hollow the muffler so you can say "But it said on the box 50 state legal". How many cops have decible meters on them?

many cops now cary decible meters on the cars with them now. lots of kids want them thumping radios on there cars.

the glsspack is for inspection if the state requires a muffler to be installed

the mufflers i use are flowmaster race mufflers. had some complaints about the noise but i know which towns around my area have noice ordinences. and unless your ripping on it a cop normally won't pay that much attention to you. i got illegally tinted windows and a loud exhaust but they don't pay me no attention cause i drive like i have a brain.
