2000 Blazer Whine in Drive and Reverse only

I am told it is the torque convertor since that is the only thing that turns in drive when the car is not moving but have read several threads with similar problems that say it was the vacuum switch on the transfer case. The sound appears to come from the Tranny...it was hard to stick my head under the car with my foot on the brake...and didn't trust the neighbor I had with me to try and pinpoint exactly. The whine gets louder when acceleratiing but gets lost with highway speeds. Any similar stories would be appreciated. Assuming it is the torque convertor...any ideas on how long I have with just a whining noise?

A whine from the tranny is usually an indicator of issues within the tranmission. A whine usually comes from the transmission pump, especially when the whine is present when the truck is not moving and in or out of gear. When was the tranny last serviced(fluid/filter)? How does it shift between gears, does it bump hard between gears, does it really shift softly?

Re: 2000 Blazer Whine in Drive and Reverse only

Thanx. I just replaced the oil, filter and cooler lines last year. It was shifting hard into 2nd when hot because of the "P1870 code problem" which GM should have recalled. I guess that takes it's toll on the tranny. The fix for that is around $500.00 which involes modifying the valve body. I just bit the bullet and had that done, tranny and torque converter rebuilt and they threw in the tranny cooler rad I had all for $1,600.00, Can't do everthing yourself. It pays to shop around. The more reputable place matched the lower price I had.

Is it still under warrenty? If it is, take it back where you got it done and tell them what is going on. Let them deal with it. It would be a good idea if you know someone who has the capability, to scan the computer to see if any store codes are present.
