Thumbs down Bogging and back firing

I'm totally new to the world of car repairs so bare with me if this sounds stupid. I have a 90 Civic DX hatchback to start with. I was driving earlier and the engine light came on and when I put it in first it started
bogging(rocking violently back and forth)so I put in 2nd and the same happened along with a backfire. I've been doing a bit of research on this site and found that it might be my 02 sensor. Does this sound right or does anyone have any other info help. Thanks allot.

Probably time to pick-up a repair manual... That will tell you how to check what gets mentioned. Helm is by the best (used by shops) then Chilton with Haynes(sp) coming in last...

Anyway, sorta sounds like the timing belt might have jumped a tooth or two.

pull back the carpet in the passanger side floorboard and their is a gold plate with a peep hole and count the flashes. one lone flash =10 and every short flash =1 so 2 longs and 4 shorts =24 then their will be a big pause and look in the service manual for that code

I pulled back my carpet in the passenger side and counted the # of flashes. First there was 4 flashes followed by 8 then 16 and this cycle repeated itself. The flashes were all consistant. Around a half of a second apart. Anybody?

here are your flash codes:

4 - Crank Angle Sensor
8 - TDC(Top Dead Center) Sensor
16 - Fuel Injector

they all lead to issues causing bogging and backfiring.

number 4 and 8 are most likely due to your timing being off, so check your timing belt, and get the car timed if you dont know how to do it.

the 16 is most likely caused by a faulty injector, wiring, or the plug. make sure all are tight, and that the wire doesnt looked frayed going to your injector. you can test which injector isnt working, by having the car running, and pulling the plugs off the injectors, if the car remains the same way, you know that injector aint working to begin with, if it starts crapping out even more, then that injector was good.

hope all this helps.

Thanks for the help. I took the car to a Honda specialist that I stumbled upon by accident and he told me that all of my problems stemmed from a shitty distributor which was rebuilt. Since I have 2 motors I did the distributor swap and reset the computer and no more bogging or backfiring. I guess theres no code to tell you that your distributor needs changing! You learn something new every day.
