Any major or common problems?
Hey all,I am looking at buying a 95 tsi talon and have heard alot of bad things about these cars always breaking down and costing alot to fix those problems, what I ain't sure about is that in the older ones or are the 95's and up alright? Just curious to see what kind of problems you all have had if any. I do like the car and the price is decent but don't wanna buy it and have it sitting in the shop more then being driven.

theres alot of things that can go wrong with a dsm of any year. they WILL break. no dsm is bulletproof. but its all the fun of owning one, think of it as a lifestyle.

I own a 95 talon tsi awd and have nothing to complain about. Talons are like any other car, if you treat it right she will treat you right. One note of caution, on the 95-99 talons/eclipses there is a big chance that the car is suffering from crankwalk. take the car for a test drive if possible a check if the clutch sticks to the floor on left hand turns or if it makes a fast clicking sound when pressed. Best thing to do is buy one with a ton of kms so the price is lower and swap a 1g engine into it, that's what i did and my car runs like a dream. hope that helps.

You have to make sure the engine is actually new ar at least has a good rebuild, a lot of places will claim that an engine is new and it has over 200,000km on it. Also if the engine is new you have to baby it for awhile to break it in or else it won't last that long.

Common Problems
Here's some well known problems:
ISC motor goes bad (causes idle surge, where car idles erratic) Hatch struts give out (I've replaced a pair on every DSM I've owned) Burns oil (115k, mine burns very little) Cigarette lighter doesn't work very well Sunroof rattles/hatch rattles Thrust Bearing Failure (aka crankwalk, happens most to 95 and up Eclipse/Talon Turbos, believed to be caused by manufacturing defects in a batch of engines), which can be checked by removing the oilpan and measuring the play in the crank...usually happens around 70k miles from what I hear but my car never got it. If you're really interested in buying a DSM there's a wealth of information available to the community here. I hope you don't let the bad things you hear deter you from driving one, they're fun cars to drive I have a pic of mine under my profile.... |
