hp

i plan in a few weeks to buy a b16 engine swap, but i have a friend with a del sol who is planning the same thing. WE are both very competitive and i would like to secretly gain more hp than him so i can beat him and he wont know my secrets. i plan to turbo. BUT i was thinking of boring the block, porting and polishing it , and makin the stroke longer. i think this would help me on my quest to makin my friend feel stupid, but i dont really know the pros and cons of this. so if any bod has info on this or some better ideas they would be highly appreciated.

Theres a company that makes a stroker kit for the 1.6, but it strokes it to a 1.8 and costs like $2000. So youd be better off finding a 1.8 to start with. His del slow weighs more than your rex so you allready have an advantage there. I bored my 1.6 .020 over and only gained .8 cubic inch, so boring doesnt really gain you a whole lot. If your going to rebuild the motor and going forced induction, you have alot of choices. IMO go with lower compression pistons, good rods and run the 75 horse shot on a nitriuos kit. Plus the normal bolts on and the fact your a couple hundred lbs lighter you'll put a hurting on him for sure.

No, true of him having the advantage over the del sol. The Del Sol will use the 2nd generation B16a which makes like 10 more hp over the 1st generation B16 that the CRX uses.

Yeah...with the lighter CRX, especially the 88, the lightest of them all, and you'll smoke his heavier Del Slow.

The '88 CRX's weigh from 1820(HF) to about 2000(Si) and the '94 Del Slow's start at 2300 to 2500lbs

All the suggestions above are pretty good. Just get good rods (I am sure they make rods for b16's designed to be turboed and lower the compression (this is prolly done with the rods) a bit for your turbo setup and you'll be golden. If you do get a turbo or nitrous kit, it will be pretty hard to hide it. One run and he'll know you have more than an all-motor setup. You may not need it armed with the weight information you now have

U dont have to stroke it man. Just build it up with low or high compression pistons and resleeve it. Replace any aftermarket rods. Then upgrade your fuel system. You'll have a 12 second car right there. Of course get upgraded clutch and boost controller

now thats some funny shit.

u can port polish, but u dont need to make the stroke longer. get some cams or something, that would give u an advantage or him, plus like everyone else is saying, how the del sol weighs so much more. plus with the cams, he cant see it, so he wont even know u got it

Come to the Dark Side!

Don't change the stroke! The stroke on your B16 is already optimum! Anything else will lower the RPMs your engine can reach, as well as decreasing the engine's reliability.
Good luck!

PS-If his car is faster than yours, there's always sabotage. Just take off his distributor cap, and make a tiny little mark with a pencil. It'll run like shit, and he'll never figure it out. If you want to make sure it doesn't run at all, make lots of marks! Then, when he's frustrated, just clean it out with some WD-40 and a rag, and he'll have a miraculous recovery, as well as being eternally thankful!

my turn my turn, I wanna put in my $.02.
First of all, DO NOT PORT AND POLISH, the B16 head is the best flowing head Honda has made. I'm not talking about cams and this and that but overall flow numbers on the B16 head flow way better than any head they have made for that particular application. That said, go with a good set of cams and upgrade your springs and retainers while you are there. A good set of adjustable cam gears to dial them babies in with and you are there. On the bottom end, you have MANY MANY options. The #1 thing I would do is start with a B20 bottom end and slap on the vtec head. BUT, you didn't ask about that, you asked about what to do to the 1.6L bottom end. If you are undecided to go all motor/turbo/nitrous be conservative but smart. First, the rods are the weakest part of a Honda motor. Replace the rods with something like Eagle rods and find a good set of forged pistons to top it off, maybe SRP. The stock crank is golden from the factory. If you wanna go all motor, knife edge the damn thing and take a few pounds off to lighten the reciprocating mass. If you plan on going turbo/nitrous, micro-polish it and leave it alone. There you have it, a good, reliable, do anything B16. Keep stock compression if you are undecided in order to run a few pounds of boost or nitrous. I wouldn't go over 75 shot of NOS or 7 lbs of boost on this setup. At this stage, your rings are gonna be your only worries. A good intake manifold, header, CAI, exhaust (2.25 to 2.5), and an upgraded fuel system will put you over the top. Best of luck and keep us updated.
Whew, I'm spent!!!

Wow, STD. Sounds like good advice. Seems to follow everything I read in the Civic Swap Manual. Pure gold, that thread.

Okay, the both of you are doing B16 swaps. Of course you guys are going to check out each others swaps when they get done. How are you going to hide a turbo? He's gonna take one look in your engine bay and kick you in the nuts. There is no way you are hiding the turbo or muffling a BOV. You will beat him anyway but if you want to mod incognito you'll have to go the all motor route. Up your compression and work the valvetrain. That's the only way you can do it. As far as bolt ons....nothing says sleeper like a JDM ITR 4-1 header and heatshield. (avatar)
