Re: oil in antifreeze

I'm afraid that finding oil in your antifreeze is a tell tale sign of a blown head gasket.

Keep in mind, though, that oil and radiator water will normally form a mix of green (or orange, or whatever color the antifreeze is) and marbled black. It would be an oil and water mix, after all. They would tend to separate like the oil and vinegar in Italian dressing. At least that's often the case, anyway. Your water MIGHT be dark just because you need a serious radiator flush.

If it is indeed a blown head gasket, there are other signs to look for:

Does the car run hot?
Does your heater work like it should?

And two sure signs of a bad gasket are:

Is there any wetness around the area where the engine head meets the block?
Is there any water in the oil when you drain your oil pan?

Good luck!

Re: oil in antifreeze

Toyota comes from the manufaturer with a red extended drain coolant. Needs to be flushed at 30-40,000 miles. If you bought it and the reservoir fluid is dark its most likely just dirty and needing a flush. If your radiator fluid was dark black with oil in it your oil would be low and it would smell pretty bad. I think you probably just need a good radiator flush, if you do it yourself make sure you put in the right fluid your vehicle to keep that waterpump safe. Hope this helps.
