4WD burning rubber smell
Anyone having problems with 4hi? Just picked up a used 2002 Envoy from a co-worker. So like anyone I wanted to make sure all the toys were working. I was driving home from work and kicked it over to 4hi drove for about 5 miles it shifted smoothly, however it was definitely noticeable by the extra load on the engine. I kicked it back over to 2hi when stopping at a light. I had a strong burning rubber smell. I kicked it back to 4hi while sitting there and the engine really dogged; all most stalled once it engaged. The truck feels as if it was in 4lo. The seller swears she never had an issue. I have not had a chance to check the fluid levels; I’ll be doing this tonight. The vehicle has been maintained exclusively at the dealer and everything is current. Anybody have any ideas what I may be facing in repairs? I hope I am not going to regret buying used instead of new. Just trying to determine if I need to dump the thing off to avoid a road of costly repairs. Any feedback is appreciated.

Does your Envoy have the AWD option - if not you should not be using 4hi on dry pavement. AWD can be used on dry pavement while 4hi should not. Take it somewhere where the tires would slip in 2 wd and try it there if you are concerned about the transfer case
