01 taurus wagon

hey guys

i have an 01 taurus wagon and was driving in town and the car just died on me.
i pulled into a parking lot and it cranked and i started to take off and it died again.
after setting for a few mins it started so i headed home. at some point i noticed the ac wasnt blowing cold anymore,
now when cold the car starts runs fine untill it gets warm, the warmer it gets the higher the idle gets,if you turn it off it wont start but after it sets for 15 to 20 mins it will start and run again.
the check engine light came on so i stopped at oriley and no codes..
i went to auto zone and with no cel on he siad the code was for temp sensor.
got a temp sensor and coil and replaced both.
still same issue.
cel on and my nephew brought his small diagnostic tool and pulled no codes while it was running or when it wouldnt start.

Re: 01 taurus wagon

If the CEL is on there should be codes. Maybe the scan tools you've tried so far are unable to read manufacturer-specific codes....

I'd suggest checking the fuel pressure when the car is running as well as when it won't start. The symptoms are consistent with a worn and failing fuel pump. What are the chances this started happening when the fuel level was below 1/4 tank of fuel? The fuel in the tank helps to cool the fuel pump.

There are certainly other things that could cause this, but fuel pressure is generally pretty easy to check. Often the local chain auto parts stores will have a fuel pressure tester available in their tool rental program.

Re: 01 taurus wagon

Good luck, and please repost back with the results. I wouldn't expect that the CTS could cause stalling and a no start condition, but since it can impact the injector duty cycle, I suppose it might be possible.

Re: 01 taurus wagon

thanks
i put a cts on it and it hasnt stalled again so far.
but the next morning the cel comes back on and it gives a p1633 code.
so i cleared it and drove it around a bit that day. everything ok.
i drove it today and the cel came on again,i think it came on when i turned the ac on,p1633 again, and the ac is not working the 10 amp fuse is good.

Re: 01 taurus wagon

The P1633 indicates the Keep Alive Memory (KAM) voltage is low. If your battery cables are clean and tight, and the original style molded ends rather than the "temporary" bolt-on clamps, then you may want to get your battery tested. Or, if the battery is more than 3 years old and you plan to keep the car for another few years, you should consider replacing the battery.

Re: 01 taurus wagon

thanks bud

last winter during a cold spell it dragged when trying to crank.
i took it to walmart and the battery checked on the edge of going bad.
they put a new one in it and the cables are clean.

Re: 01 taurus wagon

Are the clamps at the battery molded onto the cable, or the temporary style that sandwich down onto the bare wire (like the image below)? If the type that sandwich on the wire, those are really only intended as a temporary solution. Over the years I've seen a lot of issues caused by corrosion either under the clamping bracket, or underneath the insulation of the wire due to the exposed end. If you car has this type of battery cable end, I'd recommend you replace the cable with a molded style of the proper length.
