HELP!!! Crossed terminal wires when installing new battery
I know I know I'm a dumbass. Now that that's cleared up, I really need some help. I accidentally connected positive to negative and negative to positive when putting a new battery in my 06 Cobalt. It sparked a bit, then the horn went off and there was a big puff of smoke from the engine. Immediately unhooked it and stood there for about two minutes in disbelief of how stupid I am. Looked under the hood and one wire is completely fried, not sure which wire it is. Please help!!!

Re: HELP!!! Crossed terminal wires when installing new battery
All you can do is fix the wire, check every fuse your can find in the fuse box and under the hood. Maybe you didn't fry the ECU or alternator. Check voltage on the battery also.

Re: HELP!!! Crossed terminal wires when installing new battery
As mentioned, you'll have to replace the wire (can you see what is connected to each end?) and find any activated fuses.
There's a good chance that the diodes in the alternator/generator have been damaged. Let's hope the other system electronics (e.g. engine computer, ignition modules, radio, secuity, etc.) had protection built in to save them from this mishap. |
