Question

Are you talking about America only or worldwide?? Then you should probly include the Japanese Yakudza. They are the first thing that comes into mind when I hear the word "Mafia", probably because they fit the common perception of it better than anyone else. Russian mafia is a totally different concept, its not big fat guys driving around in tinted LandCruisers who sell weapons and drugs, those are just pretending.
Italian mafia - I didnt even know that existed until a few years back. Chinese -wtf is that?? I never been to China but....

are you serious? they're the most popular mafia in the world... even the word mafia is italian, the word was made when the original mafia in sicily was started... it's actually M.A.F.I.A. it stands for something they're all italian words so i don't remember what they mean.

Plus all the most popular mafia movies like the Godfather, Goodfellas, etc. are all italian mafia. There wasn't any chinese/japanese, russian, or any other mafias before the italian

and i'm talkin mainly about in the United States... cause that's where they all went. Early on in the century the mafia was getting alot of trouble from mussolinni in italy, during the the first world war, they stopped paying as much attention to the mob, so most of the mafia moved to the United States, since it was the land of the free, to make money.

but the mafia originally based in sicily wasn't really a criminal organization, they were made to protect the italians there from the government... they ended up having almost all the control, they controlled the police, that's when they decided to start making money off of it.. then mussolini was tryin to get rid of them, so they went to U.S.

john gotti jr. (gotti's son) got arrested a while back.... so who is the boss of the gambino family now?! They're the most powerful, some people said that john gotti is still callin all the shots from in prison (he has a liftime sentance with no chance of parol, because that muthafucker Sammy "the bull" gravano, went to the FBI and told them everything so he could save himself.... what a rat, it's people like him that are ruining the mafia. That's braking the code, that you're not supposed to attract or say a word to the police. Gotti wouldn't even be in prison if it wasn't for him, gravano admitted killing 19 people and he only did 5 years jail time, then went into witness protection. he then started an ecstasy ring, and started up all his crime again. now he's in prison again, he might be transferred to new york cause that's where the ecstasy was from.... that's also where all the people he ratted out are, soo RIP tough guy

yeah man, that just fucks the whole system.... they did so good in the 70s cause nobody talked, no matter what. They also tried to keep low (that's what i think they're doin now) Gotti didn't try to keep low though, he wore his $4000 suits and smiled for the cameras.... he was cool though, just one mistake having sammy gravano his under-boss and not bein cautious enough
that sammy gravano is such a rat

yeah i love'em too they're my heros

John Gotti was called the Teflon Don, cause the police couldn't get him on any charges, i think he did like 3-4 trials in 2 years and the charges were dropped on all of them. Then the governent took away his life long lawyers, and got sammy gravano to testify against him... that put him away for life. The governemnt didn't play fair though, i think they were just tired of being humiliated by gotti. they got him on a RICO charge, that means something about how they don't have to follow the constitution for certain organized crime type things. They got him mainly for organizing stuff

Hmm, most of your points are correct, but nowadays, at least in the US, barring terrorists like Bin Laden and his associates, the main wanted people are mostly the Mexican drug kingpins. Go to the FBI website pbs.org/frontline to see all the stuff on it. Namely the Arellano-Felix brothers from Tijuana.

Hmmm, let's see. I'm Sicilian, have my own side business, and have a nice ass car. Does that mean I'm in the family? Don't know and you can't make me say a thing! One of my cousins in Sicily is a big time prosecutor of the mafia and if you want to go visit him you need to call way in advance. His house is like a fortress. There's tanks chillin at the front of his driveway with armed guards constantly walking around. It's fun when you drive around the streets and you see a couple cops with some big guns standing in front of an apartment complex because you know someone important is in there. Then a couple blocks down you got some more cops standing on the corner drinking their espresso not caring what the hell you're doing. Then there's the restaurant on the beach that just got blown up. Why? Don't ask me!! Let's just say it was rumored they didn't want to pay anymore. So this stuff still goes on, it's just not as high profile anymore.

And the word Mafia is still unclear where it originated from. Maybe whoever was taking that class can correct me on this one. One of the theories though that it might have come from was the words "ma figlia" (spelling???), which means "my daughter". So from hearing those words it kinda sounds out mafia. That was one theory, there are several others. Once cool place to get cheap books on the history of the Italian mafia is usually at Tower and Waldenbooks when they have their sale books, you can sometimes get some nice history books for cheap.

Wow, okay, I think I've said enough for now!

IF YOU DON'T MESS WITH THEM, THEY WON'T MESS WITH YOU!

what does that have to do with the stuff i said?
you mean they're not focusing as much attention on the mafia as they did in the 80s right? that's true

accord: the word mafia originated in sicily... it stands for something, i just don't remember.
I'm 1/2 italian, so if all else fails i'm callin up some relatives and I'll be a capo... soon to be don, hehe
don't tell anybody i'm only half from now on, i'm 100% italiano hehe
