Heres one that took me about an hour to work out.

You have 9 billiard balls and one is lighter than the rest. You also have some scales (like this: )


What is the least amount of tries on the scales that you would need to work out which is the lightest ball?

just leave one out,
So you have 4 and 4

1. If your first test is even then you already have the light ball out, if your first test has a light side, then its one of those 4,
2. 2 and 2 from there,
3. then 1 and 1, and voila you have your light ball

Very close, but can be done in less ways..
You are thinking on the right track, but same theory, less ways.

3 and 3
with 3 off,

Then 1 and 1 from whichever is the light side or the side pile if the two on scales are even, if the scales are even with the 1 and 1 then its the left out one,

Hell yeah, thats a hell of a trick to pull, could probably even make some money if you pitch it right

Well, you got it right. Took me about an hour of silence to get it, was drunk and ended up playing around with 9 cigarettes to get it.

My mate got it in a funnier way, he was thinking about it for about 2 weeks, asking me the solution everytime he saw me. Then suddenly he woke up at 4am, and had it.
