Re: Porsche 917K Le Mans 1971
Which hinge are you talking about; the door or the engine lid? Did you use the Rallyraider solution for the door? Can you show further details of the hinge mechanism? Lots of progress on the body!

Re: Porsche 917K Le Mans 1971
I did a lot of sanding and puttying to straighten out the body. There were quit some sinkholes with this model.
![]() Further straightening with Mr. Surfacer 1000 wich I painted on the body and left to dry overnight. ![]() Wetsanding the body. ![]() ![]() I cut of the sidewalls and then glued them on the chassis. I'm not going to use the upper part of the chassis. I think the seat comes to sit to high. I also using the new soldered part spaceframe because of that. ![]() I made something like a doorframe with thin plasticline. ![]() A closer look. ![]() A little checking going on if everything still fits. ![]() (picture above gives the wrong impression, but it's OK) Made the top doorhinge from copperplate. It's much tougher then plastic. ![]() Painted the chassisfloor brown, according to some new reference the floor of this 917 wasn't painted with Bondo. ![]() Again a little dryfitting. ![]() ![]() I found a good sollid solution to keep the door open in a natural position. I used a little steel pin, as you can see in the picture. ![]() ![]() ![]() After carefull checking I noticed I missed a pretty big sinkhole in the nose of the body. I used Tamiya putty and after dryed I sanded it smooth. ![]() Again some pictures of my open door solution. (hope you can use this ianc) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() For closing some gaps in the sidepanel, I used one layer of tissue-paper and plasticglue. ![]() Afterwards I airbrushed thinned XF-53. Now it has that rough look. ![]() ![]() ![]() Eric |

Re: Porsche 917K Le Mans 1971
Great progress Eric, you are really speeding along! How is the engine coming? Thanks for the detail on the door hinge as well. How do you like the Mr. Surfacer? I had a terrible time getting the roof smooth after filling around the Daytona Window. I tried to get some, but my local hobby shop can't get any unfortunately...
Great update! ianc |

Re: Porsche 917K Le Mans 1971
A small update on the Porsche 917K. Before I could spray the body white I had to make various holes in the body to give room to the different cutoff-switches.
![]() Then body was sprayed with thin layer of grey primer followe by Grand Prix White from Zero Paint. ![]() After spraying the body white and left to dry my attention went to the cockpit. I worked on small items in the cockpit. ![]() To glue these parts I always use 2K glue. It takes a lot off time since I have to wait for the glue to harden. ![]() More pictures from the cockpit-work. ![]() ![]() Made the fixingpoints for the safetybelt. I made them from some leftover PE. ![]() ![]() ![]() I dryfitted the brakediscs. ![]() ![]() At first I was a little scared to start decalling. I had given away the original Fujimi decals and then it occured to me that the decals from Profil24 wouldn't fit the Fujimi body. No worry's Ian, the decals did fit. The only little problem was for the front decals. Since I going to build this car after the race I can hide it a little bit. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Eric Last edited by ewestra; 02-28-2012 at 06:34 PM. |

Re: Porsche 917K Le Mans 1971
Looks great Eric; beautiful work! Are you going to clear the body, or just leave it as is? You're lucky the Martini decals don't overlap the fender louvers. I'm beginning to worry about that a bit... How's the engine going; any progress there?
Let me know if you need the Fujimi decals (or even just part of them) back and I'll be happy to send them to you. But now I need to convince you to sell me your Salzburg #23 decals. ![]() ianc |

Re: Porsche 917K Le Mans 1971
Thanks Ianc and yes I'm going to clearcoat the body. It's already in it's first coat and I started to polish it a little bit. There will be a second clearcoat and then a final polishing. Then I'm going to do the unthinkable....I'm going to weather it like after the gruelling 24 hours complete with left front damage. This will be a first for me let's hope it turnes out ok
Btw Ian...PM sent. |

Re: Porsche 917K Le Mans 1971
There was a big gap in the front wheelarches. I filled them with thin plasticard.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The firewall needed some layer of heatprotection. I used selfadhesive folie from MFH. Made some templates with maskingtape and cut them out and placed them on the firewall. ![]() Next were the safetybelts. These are made from MFH selfadhesive cloth. ![]() The buckels on the real car are metallic red, so I painted transparent red directly on the metal buckels. ![]() ![]() Steeringwheel finished. ![]() All the wiring in the cockpit is done. ![]() Next was to finish the rearframe. The kitframe is far from complete and accurate. To build the frame I used various plastic rod. ![]() Also the coolingducts were opened with the Dremel. ![]() Work on the frame almost done. ![]() ![]() Coolingducts were handpainted with artists oilpaint to get the polyester look. ![]() ![]() Next I worked on the rearsuspension. I also made these from plastic rod. To fix them on the frame I squezed the ends flat with flatnosed plyer and drilled a small hole to recieve small bolts. ![]() ![]() ![]() The shockabsorber is from RB-Motion. Fantastic stuff. ![]() Some dryfitting. ![]() Ready to spay on the satinblack paint. I masked the coolingducts with fluid maskinggel. ![]() After spraying black I weathered the coolingducts with Alclad II smoke and with silverpaint the chipped paint on the frame. ![]() ![]() Eric |

Re: Porsche 917K Le Mans 1971
was waiting for this update! Beautiful work on the frame and suspension Eric; I really like the cockpit wiring and seatbelts too! What is the name of the masking gel you're using? I have some Micromask from Microscale and it doesn't work worth a damn...

Re: Porsche 917K Le Mans 1971
I use Mr. Masking Sol from Mr. Hobby and this works like a charme for me.
Made some progress on the exhaust. Since the MFH does not have a compleet exhaust in the engine kit I had to make the endtubes myself. I used aluminium tube. Cut to size and sanded them tapered. In the end I drilled the opening wider. ![]() ![]() The MFH exhaustpieces were soldered together. ![]() Dryfitting the endpipes in the exhaustholder. ![]() All looks well. ![]() ![]() Then I started weathering. For this I used (for the first time) graphite-powder (just the normal one for doorlocks) and it worked great. I'm thinking to use this also when I'm going to weather the body. ![]() ![]() The endtips were sprayed with a light coat of Alclad II smoke. ![]() ![]() ![]() Also used the graphite-powder on the front brake cooling ducts. The first picture is before, the second after. ![]() ![]() Couldn't resist a little build-up. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Eric |

Re: Porsche 917K Le Mans 1971
![]() Work continued on the rearsuspension. ![]() Made the batterycables, so the battery could be installed. ![]() The fuelpumps were found in the the scrapbox. I altered it a bit with pieces of an injectionneedle and tubes. ![]() This is how it looks. ![]() I made a sort triangle to connect both tubes from the pumps, I soldered three pieces of injectionneedle together. ![]() The single tube coming from the fuelpumps is going to the injection unit. ![]() I detailed the mandatory sparewheel with pieces of metal tube. ![]() I started gluing different parts together with 2C-glue. ![]() Done! ![]() To mount the engine, I use this Stabilit. It is stronger then normal 2C-glue. ![]() With the engine fixed, I made the driveshafts. I painted it with different shades of Alclad II and painted the rubberpart semi gloss black and weathered it a bit with matt light grey. ![]() I attached the two coils to rear of the spaceframe and put a Bosch decal on both of them. ![]() The kit was missing a startermotor, so I looked in my sparesbox and found one. ![]() Next were the wheels. First I masked the rim. I wanted to give the center a rough look. ![]() After thet I painted the white, red and blue stripes on the center of the wheels. In those days it was also handpainted and didn't look that sharp. In the kit there are decals to be put on. It will look to neat for this period of time. ![]() Work on the oil-side of the 917. ![]() Made the belt for the sparewheel. ![]() The rearwindow in the cockpit is way to thick. So I made a new one from transparent plastic. I even made the slidewindow open. ![]() I wanted to represent as it looked when it crossed the finishline. All dirty and bruised. In the following pictures you can see the result. I sprayed very light coats of Zere Paints Jet Black. I also used dirty white spirit in wich I cleaned my brushes. It works very good. I placed a drop on the model and with the airbrush (empty of course) I imitated the wind of the car at high speed. With a tiny brush I repicated the strokes of rubber on the car. I even made the damage on the left front of the car when it hit something close to the end of the race. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Oiltubes were placed on the oilcooler in front of the car. ![]() Everything installed at the front of the car. ![]() The whole fuel unit is ready. ![]() Made the oil-catchtank from transparent resin. ![]() The windsrcreen was glued into place. ![]() Two cross-tubes had to be placed in the enginecompartment. And then.......after a long time......IT'S FINISHED ![]() Here are the pics of the finished 917. There are just a few things I want to change. The headlights aren't very convincing, the windscreen can use some deadbugs. Does anybody can give me an idea how to do this? Anyhow....enjoy the pictures of the finished Porsche 917 and thank you all for your contribution. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Again, thanks for watching. Re: Porsche 917K Le Mans 1971
Great model Eric.
Incredibly nice and detailed build up. I only would add some dust on the windshield, cause usually in such dirty races pilot use wipers or ask mechanic to clean the front part by hands with sponge. Great model.
