Re: 1/12 Datsun 240ZG

Very nice detail work, can't wait to see the finished model!

I saw an orange 240z just like the one you posted at ZCon '07 in Daytona, FL. Looked fantastic going around the track and at the shows. So I vote orange if you haven't chosen blue already : )

Re: 1/12 Datsun 240ZG

Thanks Spidey....but, um.........NO !.....

Thank you too InsomniacZ32..
They are great pics, and I've saved them...hope you don't mind.
That is the car of my dreams, and the one which got me started on this build..I've deviated away from it in motor only......so far.
I will need to get another of these kits, as I do want to fully replicate this orange beast to the best of my ability.....in the future...

So, this build will be painted the light blue...a close clone. Sorry to disappoint those wanting the red/orange...

Small update....
Well, now that I've decided on doing the red (Safari version) as a stock showroom build, I realized the fuel tank was going to need changing....the race style fuel cell just would not cut it....
So, this is what I started doing....it's a fairly basic shape, so wasn't that hard to duplicate....

The most obvious deviation from a stock tank is the fuel feed on the bottom of the tank.
I want to run a duel feed from the tank, so I made a fuel block and mounted in place. It will have duel fuel lines running forward, through twin pump/filters,
which I'll mount on a bracket just in front of the tank. A junction/joiner will then run a single line to the motor.

That's it for now....I expect to get a good bit done this coming week as I have some annual leave happening....
Stay tuned guys.....

cheers
Greg

Fantastic work on the gas tank, one thing that I have been wondering though. When all is done and this project is complete, will you have used any of the kit pieces? Honestly I keep waiting for when Ill start reading a new post saying "...so I decided to scratch build an entire new body for the car today..." I dont know, just wondering.

I really cant wait to see your tread on the showroom stock Z as well. Im really glad that you re-changed you mind on it (back to doing to) You'll have to let me know when that happens.

One of these days Ill dust off my 240Z kit and start building my dream Z. Though that is not a 1/12th scale like yours. However the more I read up on yours, the more it makes me get one.....or two....or three....or....

Shouldn't be too many parts left over.....I hope... Apart from the big ugly fuel cell in the Safari kit, and probably the old race bucket seats..
I have a nice race style seat lined up for this one, the stock build will get the seats from here...
I guess there will still be the odd part or two that doesn't get a job.....but not enough for another car...... I'm going to need a third, I can tell.....

Re: 1/12 Datsun 240ZG

Update...June....

Well.....I'm bored.............................

Nah, seriously, I'm actually awaiting the arrival of some more nuts'n'bolts from Scale Hardware......
So......in the mean time, I decided to look into the brakes......non-functional brakes.......sorry for the disappointment........
Tamiya, in their wisdom...(?) molded little stubs on the calipers and drum backing plates....obviously (?) to add brake line (tube) to.....
BUT, not a word in the manual, and nothing in the box to indicate such.....
Undaunted, I'll get around that issue when I get to them...
Now...the E-brake.............NOTHING......not one part in the box to represent it...... Admittedly, it is obscured by the tail shaft and exhaust...but, it still a pretty visible component.

I started by making a base plate from angle, and some basic linkages, all from plastic stock. RBMotion nuts'n'bolts hold it together...

Mocked up, just to check alignment etc.....

Threw on some dull metallic paint, it will get a dirty wash, once it's all in place...

It will mount in the tunnel, just ahead of the diff...

I then turned my attention to some interior work...
The glovebox lid is molded as a separate piece...as this and the Safari version share their dashboard, only the glovebox lid differing...
Trouble was, it is molded quite thick, at approx 3mm.......

I thinned it, for more scale realism and.........

And..........finally......FINISHED !.....I have both tyres done now...just need to get some casting action happening.....

I'll have more soon guys, and hopefully, some news on the wheels and tyres.....

cheers
Greg

Re: 1/12 Datsun 240ZG

Thanks Twenty and Rollin'......

Small update for yous......
I've modified the assembly I made just slightly.....adding an aluminium tube and bolts, rather than the plastic bits I had in there...It's much stronger now.
I also realized after several test fits, there was bound to be issues with interference.....mainly the tail shaft...

I had already trimmed approx 2mm from the diff mount, but decided to cut a hole in the tunnel floor as well, allowing my bracket to now sit flush..Much better..

This is now what the final draft looks like, just resting in place, and connected to the handbrake lever.....

And.........
Handbrake...................OFF...

Handbrake.......................ON.....

I'm hoping to get some colour on the chassis tomorrow or the weekend, as I really want to start adding some of these parts to it permanently...

More soon guys....
cheers
Greg
