Our education system seems to value creativity and imagination in English over some basic skills that seem fundamental to the skills required in the workforce. Someone close to me suggested that our education system has been hijacked by a bunch of liberal, politically correct socialists who reject the restrictive constraints of skills and achievement. I'm beginning to think she was right (at least on this issue).

The fact that Kapa Haka is considered to be of equal status to English and Mathematics in terms of NCEA credits should give some indication of
the values placed on a good education in New Zealand. (If you have to ask what Kapa Haka is, that proves my point)

And sadly explains why we have a growing problem of adult illiteracy (and innumeracy) in New Zealand - despite the fact we have authors/educator who have lead the world in teaching the young to read.
