Thanks for the comment. I probably won't paint the tyre lettering but I may use some white chalk dust to highlight the raised edges.

Re: Datsun 510 - Old School Racer Style

A little bit of progress, finally managed to get some primer applied! Bright orange to do next!

Just noticed that the photo's are a little blurred, obviously still need to learn how to use my new camera!

Looks great, you need to spend a bit of time experimenting with your new camera as you should get better results than your old Fuji!

From your posts i can see you are a professional. I an new to modelling so was seeking some advice on how to obtain the best finish on my models. Do you use spray? Or brush to obtain the best finish and do you use a clear coat? Also what are the materials you use to modify your models? I look forward to the rest of your build up.

Thanks for your comment, I would definitely not consider myself a professional but it is a nice compliment! I use automotive spray paint cans from an Auto Parts store called Halfords here in the UK. I have started to use a clear coat even with solid colours now because I find it makes it easier when cutting back to achieve a decent finish. I simply use a very well worn piece of 1200 grade silicone carbide paper which is probably equivalent to a 6000 grade new piece and wet sand the clear coat back to get rid of any orange peel, after this stage the model will have a pretty much completely matt finish! I then use cutting polish, followed by Meguiars Scratch remover, finally followed by a decent wax polish. To get rid of any wax residue left in all of the panel lines etc I use a cocktail stick.

I only use a brush for detail painting.

I have got an airbrush but I am yet to use it mainly because of the amount of spray cans I have left to use up! When using an airbrush it would appear from peoples experiences on this site that the 2K paints are the easiest to use and produce the best results with minimum cutting an polishing although they are toxic so need to be used with proper breathing equipment and ventilation systems. Alclad appears to be good for chrome and metal pieces.

Most modellers use styrene (a form of plastic) available in sheets of varying thicknesses, tubes, rods, strips etc and available in most model/art supplies shops for modifications to models. For filling gaps etc I sometimes use automotive filler because it sets very quickly or milliput which sets overnight. For the chrome trim I use bare metal foil, another product readily available and simple to use.

I have picked up a lot of great tips from this forum and a lot are available in the how to and frequently asked questions sections.

Another simple tip I would give is try not to rush and take your time. Generally the better your preparation and hence time taken will produce the best results.

Hope this helps and good luck with your future builds. The more practice you have the better you will get!

All the best

Darren

Nice model (VERY nice work so far) and a nice helpful person to boot (the time you took above to explain to someone else everything you've learned is invaluable to some people, myself included!)
I'm quite new to this forum, but intend on posting some WIP this weekend ... they all pale in comparison to work like this though, keep it up!! :o)

Re: Datsun 510 - Old School Racer Style

It's now looking very orange, a bit of a tangerine dream! Test fitting everything still appears ok, although I had to remove a lot of excess paint to get the front grille to fit, I don't think I will ever get that out again as it was a very tight fit! Still a fair bit to do but finally feel like I am getting somewhere now!

I am still not happy with the pictures on my new camera, I could not get the orange to come out very well. Daylight actually produced almost a pinkish colour image and surprisingly the ones taken below using artificial light produced the best result which is strange.

I love the stance of it! The front grill is also intergrated very well and looks fine. The orange reminds me of the jagermeister porsche orange
