Hang on a minute there mate...

Yes I do agree JD - it's fairly unlikely unless there is some congenital issue such as allergy, asthma or sensitivity to any particular compound or substance contained in cannabis sativa smoke that you'd die DIRECTLY from smoking it.

On the second point, there is potential when anyone is intoxicated by the effects of a narcotic substance (whether legal or illegal) to do themselves indirect harm. This includes a impairment of judgement, function or reactions. It also may include the effects of smoking (prima facie the byproducts of burning organic matter whether it's tobacco or cannabis sativa are to a large extent fairly similar).

And finally, the medical research into the use of recreational substances is at best flawed and it is difficult to say replicate a double-blind test. In many countries, where cannabis is illegal it is difficult to have non-advocatial volunteer respondents and even where the substance is decriminalised there is still serious debate about the results of any of the research published to date.

Because of the extreme difference of opinion from BOTH SIDES of the debate on decriminalisation or legalisation of the recreational or even therapeutic use of cannabis - the information available is difficult to separate from propaganda as both sides assert their primacy.

I'm thinking the jury's out on that. I understand and accept some of the well-reasoned assertions from both sides of the debate but as also it's difficult for a lot of us to make judgement on such emotive issues. But that's the nature of a mature free and democratic society that we are able to have a debate and commit to a dialogue on such issues.

Perhaps I can add a little insight.
I posted this in a similar conversation in another forum:

The brain has natural THC receptors, the actual neurotransmitter is called anandamide. The main areas of these receptors seems to be in the limbic system, basal ganglia and cerebellum.

In the limbic system, the hippocampus is responsible for short term memory, that is why people tend to be forgetful with short term memory while under the influence of THC. The role of anadamide in the limbic system is thought to be the main controlling factor of what is known as a "selective memory" thus it will inhibit converting the short term memory of something to long term. This is why we remember lots in short term, but forget within a few minutes. If it wasn't for anandamide, our brains would literally be overloaded. Another region of the limbic system, the amygdala serves mainly in strong emotion. Anandamide could be responsible for inhibiting an overload of intense emotion in this region of the brain, but that's not clear. THC interrupts processes in this region, and thus has an effect on emotions (though the exact effect is not known)

The basal ganglia and cerebellum are responsible for coordination and balance in movement. Because there are a larger number of anandamide receptors here, THC mimicks the neurotransmitter and binds to these sites, disrupting balance and coordination.

As for side effects after use? Since THC is immiscible in water, it takes a while to leave the system, though not as long as ppl usually think. The resulting effect is simply a retention of the chemical in small amounts, so it's still effecting your brain...... not much at all though. Decreased sperm production takes place, and your immune system activity is decreased, after chronic use stops, reversal of these symptoms is quick.

Most of what is out there for ppl's views on marijauna are simply old propoganda, innacurate or wrong. Though there is still much to be learned about this drug, the majority of data suggests that recreational use is certainly less physiologically and mentally damaging than alcohol use. In my personal opinion, using it in moderation is absolutly fine. Therapeutical effects include treatments for side effects of radiation therapy, stimulate apetite in cancer and aids patients, and treat MS and glaucoma. THC may potentially also reduce malignancy in breast cancer cells and help reduce secondary brain damage caused by stroke.

As for what should happen legally? I believe that decriminalization is by far and away the best strategy. It will prevent corporations coming in and selling the plant laced with rocket fuel, cyanide and everything else they also use in cigarettes to make ppl more addicted. Another benefit is less tying up of the legal system and jails, and since they can hand out tickets for ppl caught, then there is an increased source of revenue for our government. The only problem I have with this is that there will be increased concern of people driving under the influence of THC, though I believe there are viable solutions.

Come on, HONESTLY, what the hell does that have to do with drugs? Is that some assumption about how drug dealers act with people that buy their narcotics? Clue me in here.

As long as someone doing drugs doesent directly effect me (IE them crashing into my car in a drunken state) then I am aight with it ... people need to realise that if people wanna do it then nothing is gonna stop em.

Personally I drink beer once in a while and rarely smoke pot.

Ranger-X you make some really good statements. And the ignorant politicians need to realize this. I feel it should be legalized but only can be used in private use. And I think it will be somewhere in the future say 5-10 years from now. What about the Anti-Drug commercials, they are way over dramatic. I don't know anyone who acts that stupid. However this world is full of stupid people and some may be that retarded. But I still think their commercials dramatize the way people act on pot and whats sad is that none of those people producing the commercial even know what its like to be "high". And until it b/c legal i will still stick to my guns and not smoke anymore.

Hmm,haven't looked in this thread in a while.

The only "drugs" I "use" would be caffeine and alcohol. I used to smoke cigarettes but I stopped, I never have and never will smoke marijuana or any harder drugs.

I have seen too much bad shit happen from people smoking weed (my best friend got expelled from school for possession - granted it was his own fault but the point still is made). My philosophy is that I get enough shit and poison into my lungs by accident by simply breathing the air, that I don't need to put any more in deliberately.

I have a lot of friends who smoke weed, I don't think any less of them, I just would never do it for myself. However, it's the chronic pot heads who annoy me, the ones who do nothing but smoke it any chance they get. These people do get dumber, I've seen it first hand at school. No motivation and they're thick as two bricks.

My 2c.

Bill Hicks was the greatest comedian of our time.

If you don't think drugs have done good things for us then take all of your records, tapes and CD's and burn them.

- Bill Hicks [Unless you like listening to New Kids on the fucking Block]

Why is marijuana against the law? It grows naturally upon our planet. Doesn't the idea of making nature against the law seem to you a bit... unnatural?

- Bill Hicks

They lie about marijuana. Tell you pot-smoking makes you unmotivated. Lie! When you're high, you can do everything you normally do, just as well. You just realize that it's not worth the fucking effort. There is a difference.

- Bill Hicks

I have never seen people on pot get in a fight, because it's fucking impossible

- Bill Hicks

And on the seventh day, god stepped back and said "There is my creation, perfect in every way... oh, dammit I left pot all over the place. Now they'll think I want them to smoke it... Now I have to create republicans."

- Bill Hicks

My final point about alchohol, about drugs, about Pornography...What business is it of your's what I do, read, buy, see or take into my body as long as I don't harm another human being whilst on this planet? And for those of you having a little moral dilemna on how to answer this, I'll answer for you. NONE OF YOUR FUCKING BUSINESS Take that to the bank, cash it and take it on a vacation outta my fucking life. And stop bringing shotguns to UFO sightings, they might be here to pick me up and take me with 'em.

- Bill Hicks
