Re: Meltzer's #028 for sale through Silicon Valley Auto Group

Another interesting thing to note is the custom enclosure for the Valentine 1 radar detector.

A lot of good that's gonna do you at 160+...maybe the driver can treat it as an indicator of when to speed up and lose the cops completely!

Edit: Adding a linked pic here as this post appears on a new page for me...

Re: Meltzer's #028 for sale through Silicon Valley Auto Group

Another comment I have is that if you look at the front bumper, the center has a rubber "plug" that says F1 on it. I always thought that it hid a receptacle for a tow hook. In reality, there is nothing behind it, at least on this car, except for a lot of wax residue. The tow hook on this car is visible underneath the bumper.

So, anyone know what the purpose of this hole is?

Also, the rearview mirrors (VW Corrado units) do not have any VW markings (or any markings at all) on the underneath, unlike Seth Neiman's car.

After comparing the signatures of Mario Andretti and Michael Andretti, I have to say that the one on the visor is definitely Michael's, and not Mario's. Here are some examples so you don't have to track them down yourself.

Mario's signature:

Michael's signature:

Thanks for the pics Monster! I'm not going to be able to make it up there. If the car is coming my way as you suggest, then all the better I guess.

Re: Meltzer's #028 for sale through Silicon Valley Auto Group

Good work Peloton! I had heard of a racer's son driving a McLaren through the paddocks at race tracks in America ...it must have been a reference to Michael Andretti driving this car. Well done. It's a bit sad that the salespeople didn't know this--they droned on and on about Mario's signature on the visor.

I wonder if Mr. Michael Andretti signed the car at someone's request, or if he did it of his own accord--because he felt he was "adding value". If I got the car I'd replace that visor!

Any idea what that rubber plug covers in the front bumper? I am really curious about the purpose of that hole. Is it an access point to some mounting screws?

I would think that they designed that hole in the nose to somehow allow the front plate to be attached without drilling extra holes in the nosepiece. Maybe there is a special way that the front plate holder attaches to that point with the plug removed. Just speculating here of course.

Leno's car had the VW markings. I didn't think to look on #068.

Strange that #028 wouldn't have them, but #045 would. You'd think if they had decided to sand them off prior to painting them, that it would have been a running change in production and all cars thereafter wouldn't have the marks.

Just figured it out...it must be where the bracket for a front license plate goes!

Re: Meltzer's #028 for sale through Silicon Valley Auto Group

Oo, didn't read that part of your reply Peloton, but yeah, I agree 100%...it's a place to mount the license plate bracket. The bracket is a rail with two sliding clips. The clips are slid out along the rail until they butt up against sides of the hole and grip from the inside of the bumper, while the rail presses in from the front. The clips are then secured by tightening their screws so that they don't move. The license plate is, in turn, fastened to the rail on the outside.

It's a simple and effective mechanism and allows you to attach plates of any size.

i got a close up of the rubber piece in the front. the best part is that it is currently upside down

i also got a good shot of the grooves in the windshield by the wiper

I don't think those raised hash marks on the windshield are a McLaren item. I suspect they came from Japan, as I've never seen or heard of them on any other F1. It just seems like one of those wacky things they would do over there.
