Re: Aftermath of Katrina. How much for gas?

One major problem is that a new refinery hasn't been built in like 20 years.

I hate to make this a political discussion but IMO the left likes it both ways. They want nothing to do with building those dirty refineries until the gas prices go up and then it's the administration's fault for not doing anything and its becuase his buddies want to make money.

The money in the oil/gas supply chain to my knowdlege is in the drilling stage, not the refining or seling. The drillers are the people who take the crude out of the ground, put it on market and receive the case subsequent to the crude removal.

Halliburton has been doing work for several decades with the US government and has been a reputable contractor. It's not like they were some small 1980's upstart that received huge contracts becuase Cheney worked there. I'm sure they would be a #1 choice if Cheney wasn't a former executive.

I need to research this more but I th ink that the US had a protectionist attitude and restricted the importation of gasoline from foreign sources. Beucase I remember reading that the US would stop restricting the shipment of something regarding petroleum and gasoline, Spain released gasoline from reserves to send over here and the prices subsequently dropped on the NYMEX.

Re: Aftermath of Katrina. How much for gas?

Here is a congressional hearing about how gas prices are set. It's rather lenghty though but you can usually get a general idea if you skip past the correct Senator's speeches.

Fuel around where i live last week was $3.55-3.80. This past Friday through today was only $2.98 gal. I think they are afraid they'll get fined for price gougiing. But whether its $2.98 or $3.98 , its still about $2-3 dollars to damn much! XI

Interesting e85. 85% ethanol. What does this stuff cost per gallon?

I found a list of GM vehicles that can run e85.

http://www.e85fuel.com/information/general_motors.php

Does it look promising or what?

Re: Aftermath of Katrina. How much for gas?

The ethanol eats up rubber O-rings on the fuel injectors/system, and an ethanol leak could be fatal.

I checked that url out. The cars that use E85 would probley be carborated or throtle body injected carbs. I'm sure its cleaner burning than gasoline. probley alot cheaper too.

Re: Aftermath of Katrina. How much for gas?

But the problem is that ethanol is alcohol and burns faster.

I know of students at my University who in a chemistry class calcuated the use of ethanol over regular gasoline and foudn that gasoline burned slower and in the end cost less.

Interesting point. What is e85 running per gallon versus reg. unleaded? I heard only around 25 cents less per gallon. Doesn't sound like a ground breaking solution.

Re: Aftermath of Katrina. How much for gas?

My sisiter lives in N. Alabama and said gas was $2.47 for regular. The price has droped over the weekend in Indy. Been $2.99 for reg. which is still about 2$ to much.

When prices spiked to $3.19-.29 range, someone in my Management class during a discussion about prices boasted she could get E-85 in Iowa for $2.85/gallon. They are typically $.10 cheaper/gal than NE because of taxes, so that's roughly $.25/gallon savings.

There was an article in our "newspaper" (Omaha World-Herald is horrible) about how they want to require 10% ethanol in all blended gasoline.

Here are the two problem I envision:

1) Another blend to make refiners put out, contributing to one aspect of the high gas prices

2) This sounds like a big, fat subsidy to me.

Re: Re: Aftermath of Katrina. How much for gas?

Prices are starting to drop slowly but surely. Funny how the prices come down in penny increments.

$2.91 - reg.
$3.01 - mid.
$3.19 - prem.
