Re: Poll - What is your Metro's Gas Mileage?

My oil sucking metro gets 52 mpg. I drive 90 miles per day round trip. Plugs are fouling every week and I have to pull them and clean them up. Incredible it still gets this gas mileage.

Re: Poll - What is your Metro's Gas Mileage?

96 Metro LSi - 1L 3cyl, 5 spd
48 MPG
city driving, 11 miles round trip to work, minor stop and go
as long as I stay out of the gas it gets close to 50 MPG, I get aggressive with the gas pedal and it dips to low 40's high 30's, highway MPG stinks. When I bought the car and brought it home, 700 miles at interstate speed(65-70MPH) mileage was 24 at best.

Re: Poll - What is your Metro's Gas Mileage?

Average about 48 both ways to/from work. Uphill one way, down hill the other. I can sometimes get 52 to 60+ if I keep my speed down and follow 2 to 4 seconds behind semi trucks at 60 to 65 mph... :-)

Re: Poll - What is your Metro's Gas Mileage?

After calculating, I get an average of about 36 MPG in my 1993 1.0L 5 speed Metro LSI. Most of this driving is done in the city with quite a few stops, and some quasi-freeway driving (going 45MPH for about 10 miles uninterrupted). Haven't really done much freeway driving because I use it mainly for school. Also, it should be noted that I don't use airconditioning (no freon ) but from time to time I use the heater to defrost the windshield. The engine was replaced by the former owner at about 120,000mi, and it is now at 182,700mi.

Is this a fair amount to expect, because, to be honest, I was expecting something in the 40s. I will try and get a more accurate calculation, for my last log was thrown off because my mom filled up the car and didn't note the mileage or how much gas she put in.

Re: Poll - What is your Metro's Gas Mileage?

I too do mostly city driving with alot of stop and go, 50mi +/ day. I range from 34 - 39mpg with a 1997 1.0L 5spd, rebuilt at 100,000mi by po, has 113,000mi now. I have got as high as 42 with city and some hwy combined, again alot of stop and go.

Hey, DerMann...if you are really putting your foot in it, high 30's is probably pretty reasonable. Have you checked the "usual suspects"? (clean & gap spark plugs, max out tire pressure, be sure your brakes aren't dragging, etc.) Also, I've found quite a few mpg by advancing the ignition timing 5 degrees & disconnecting the cold air inlet hose from the air cleaner box.

Re: Poll - What is your Metro's Gas Mileage?

If I keep my foot in it all the time, I can actually drop the mileage down to under 40 mpg. So I can see where you can get less than 40. It is tempting to keep it floored going up the hills, where you can get it to drop into the upper 20's. I use Scangauge, which really helps you realize where you are losing gas mileage. I have compared it's MPG with the hand-calculated MPG and have been within a tenth or two in MPG. Sometimes all the tuning in the world won't help - it is mostly with how you drive. Hey, we have one of the slowest accelerating cars ever made, why drive it like it is the fastest?

If you have an automatic and/or a 1.3L, then your mileage will be much less. The 1.0L/5 spd is the best combo (ok, well the xFIs are THE best), and you should be getting over 40 easy - just back off the throttle (keep it under 25% - TPS), anticipate hills by using the previous downhill to accelerate slowly then back off the throttle as you go up, keep it under 65 mph, no jack-rabbit starts. Adjust your timing to +8 to +10 deg. will help also. Like I said before, out by yourself with all the wind on the interstate - mid 30's mpg, but a safe distance - 2 to 3 seconds - behind a big rig with little wind resistance will get you high 40's to in the 50's.

Re: Poll - What is your Metro's Gas Mileage?

Since I put in the newer engine, I got at least 36mpg on my last tank. Although I started driving it with the new engine when the tank wasn't quite full (1-2 gallons low). So my next fill-up should be more adequate. My gas gauge isn't quite accurate (quarter tank left on the guage means I have about 5 gallons left). I've driven already almost 200 miles and still am not down to the half mark on my gauge. That means I'm getting at least 40mpg I think.

I will let you all know the results when I finally get the tank low enough to fill up again.

MUCH better than the 25mpg I was getting with 2 bad cylinders!

I actually have been driving with a lead foot and I really ought to stop. I'm going to ease of the gas more this week - this is after reading through 20 some pages of this forum. It's just hard to keep speed sometimes because after the car hits the higher RPMs they tend to drop really quickly on the freeway.

I'm a noob at pretty much anything automotive - how would one go about adjusting the ignition timing?

I've read through the forums and found that many members adore them, so I really think getting one would be a great investment. However, I haven't the funds to do so at the moment. There aren't any hills here (Houston, Texas), and the only slopes I come across are drive ways and overpasses. I really don't do enough highway driving, but I will use the big rigs as cover from now on.

My uncle once told me that getting the car into the highest gear possible (like shifting into third gear at 15-20MPH, not starting off in fifth gear) makes the car more efficient. I've been using this advice quite a bit, but I'm not sure if it's saving me gas (it does make for a smoother ride, though).

I've read on another topic that adding a cold air intake increases HP and MPG, so I'm really thinking about investing in one of those soon. Also, my friend suggested a MasterFlow muffler. He thinks it'd be hillarious to see a Geo with a MasterFlow because of the sound they produce. Supposedly they increase fuel economy - can anyone confirm this?

Thanks,

DerMann

Re: Poll - What is your Metro's Gas Mileage?

I have a 1991 Convertible with 102,500 miles.

I bought the car with a bad engine and a flawless body and interior for $1400 and then replaced the engine with a JDM about 10,000 miles ago.

I drive roughly 70 miles everyday - or about 350 a week.

I religiously track my fuel economy and I am averaging 42.9 mpg.

This is with a bizzare fuel injector problem that causes the pulse to be interrupted sporadically at idle. This doesn't cause a stall but it causes the idle to be very rough.

If I do just in town driving, the fuel economy is a depressing 25 mpg or so.

Thankfully, nearly 95% of my driving is on the interstate at speeds of around 60 to 75 depending on the traffic.

Re: Poll - What is your Metro's Gas Mileage?

My 92 Metro has an indicator telling you when to shift to get the best possible gas mileage, so I try to shift when the car recommends shifting. That's probably why I get such good mileage. Once in a while though I let the rpm go above 3000 but it's very seldom. As I got the car for the gas mileage, not for being fast. That's what I got my Camaro for and my old ford truck with a 390 engine.

Re: Poll - What is your Metro's Gas Mileage?

The weather has been in the 40's - 60's lately and I just filled the tank in The Phoenix and calculated 47.2 mpg on Chevron gasoline.

Been running smeeooth....

Both doors replaced, car washed and waxed. Spiffy!

Pictures will be put here soon.

Re: Poll - What is your Metro's Gas Mileage?

93 5 door, 1.0L A/T, no A/C, car just turned 119K today. 90% highway, 90 mile round trip daily commute + some town running.
Avg. MPG = 40, with 38/city & 42/highway.

My Metro has been doing the sticking thing that Doug is talking about. It acts like sticking calipers, but 2 shops and 2 people including me have looked at it, and can't figure it out. When you let off from a stop, it pulls forward but sticks, then "pops", and goes. Lately I've noticed at steady speeds the speedometer fluctuates, it surges on slight inclines without brakes applied, and has had a rattling (not clicking) from the front wheel at intermittent speeds and wheel angles. Car doesn't shimmy or shake at all. All brakes and wheel bearings including calipers have been replaced, and I now suspect CV joints, but hesitate to put in the money/effort as so far nothing else has fixed this. Any suggestions?....
