Re: You ever run out of gas ?

Driving a car from Virginia to Colorado, gas gauge broken. My brother and I were stopping every 200 miles to fill up.

Middle of Kansas. He's sleeping. I start letting off the gas like we're running out. He wakes up, sees where we are and freaks. I tell him "just kidding" and motor on.

He's back to sleep, 20 minutes later when the car jerks for real like it's running out of gas. He wakes up again, gives me a dirty look. I tell him that I'm not doing it.

We swerve back and forth, trying to get some gas to slosh into the bottom of the tank. We're 1 mile from the exit that we had planned to stop at, pull up to the stop sign behind a pickup that's more rust than anything else. How long can the gas last?

We can see the gas station just on the other side of the exit. The two (very very) old guys wait in their pickup for at least 2 minutes while several gaps in traffic pass by. We're sitting on eggshells when they finally move from the stop sign, cross the road and the car quits and rolls up to the pump.

We put 12.3 gallons in a 12 gallon tank.
