Re: any axles from other years/cars that will fit?

I had just thought of that before I read your reply. Truthfully, it is somewhat on topic since post 88 axles won't fit a pre 88 normally. This is just a crazy idea in my head right now, until I get out of NTI and have the knowledge to do it correctly.

Some people try and think of ways to replace the whole front suspension and opt for the post 88 double wishbone setup. Which requires a lot of work: Custom sub frame, reinforcement of the strut towers, custom mount points for everything,etc.....I'm a fan of the torsion bar setup, c'mon from the factory you get good adjustments out of it, but I also like the double wishbone suspension because of its camber curve under compression. So this is my idea: Swapping out Spindles, reinforcing the strut tower and adding an adjustable mount for the upper control arm, and add a fork to the shock to bolt to the lower control arm. Biggest issue so far is the lower ball joint, because the 1g has the ball joint pointing up, while the later ones are pointing down. So at most right now, I might have to have custom radius arms, possibly a custom fork, but I'm pretty sure a 4g fork will work(5g won't, the hole for the shock is too big).

Crazy idea to just pop in your head all of a sudden, but I like it. Not far fetch for me because I was planning on doing a bunch of crazy things to the car after I get out of NTI(Nascar Technical Institute if anyone is wondering).

Re: any axles from other years/cars that will fit?

I saw an eg last night with a cantilevered rear suspension, using two gsxr shocks mounted inboard in the trunk..was sick

I'm planning on re-doing the rear end of the CRX also, just don't know how.

Now we are thread jacking :P

Re: any axles from other years/cars that will fit?

That's pretty sweet... but not for me... the '89 rear suspension, that's a fairly straight forward swap, from what I saw of it, other than what I did.

Just slight welding and the complete rear suspension setup is all that's necessary... the struts bolt in the same places using the same holes. Not sure about the RTA's tho... they might need fab too, but that's easily fixable with traction bars.

Tony, the idea sounds good, but might need some tweaking to pass in real world cars... nothing to say you shouldn't at least try it tho... sounds like it might be good.

Try seeing if the LCA on the front won't just bolt in place of the old one, and use the spindle/hub assy from the '89 w/ the upper control arm and strut... front struts will bolt in the same places also, I've used '88 mounts on my '85 several times.

Re: any axles from other years/cars that will fit?

LCA won't swap over, because if you remember, the lower control arm on the 1g doesn't contain the ball joint, it only connects the torsion bar to the radius arm.

I'm not too sure if it would work in a real world car, but that isn't what I was thinking when I thought of it. By the time I get done with the car it will most likely be a tube frame. Currently I'm not wanting Struts on the front, just the shock and torsion bar. I could replace the shock with a strut, but it would be too stiff because I'm wanting to keep the torsion bar setup, otherwise its just the same as swapping over the complete 4g suspension, I'm wanting to mix the 2.

Re: any axles from other years/cars that will fit?

Well, you might be able to fab a mount after reinforcing the shock tower so that you could mount the UCA.. after that, you could probably make something work between the 88 LCA and the 85 LCA's designs, but I can't remember what the '85's look like...

Consequently, I have a complete '85 front suspension sitting in my dad's front door-yard.. but you'd have to pick it up if you wanted it lol.. I'm not shipping that beast.

It's even got the front crossmember thingy that the torsion bar tubes are bolted to (note the use of technical terminology here... )

Re: any axles from other years/cars that will fit?

#3 is the Lower control arm. #9 is the radius arm.

no way to mix the 2 different types.

When I do the strut tower, I'm planning on removing the stock strut tower completely and replacing it all with tubing, so attachments for the upper control arm and shock are no issues. I will however measure the stock tower and see if it is feasible on a normal car as well. I think its completely possible, some people have doubts of getting the geometry correct on it.

Like I said, on the rear I'm not too sure what I'm gonna do with it yet. I do what independent back there, but truthfully i do hate our trailing arms, so I'm gonna do some searching for something else.

Re: any axles from other years/cars that will fit?

Independent rear with upper and lower A-arms.

You can use the front UCA's and just flip one over, but you'd have to make a mount plate for the hub that used ball joints upper and lower... that would save you the trouble of having the trailing arms.

Frodo, I just found that thread on HT. Interesting setup, really not a bad idea either.

Re: any axles from other years/cars that will fit?

Too much fab for me... although I've considered cantilever on my next truck since it will be kinda hard to put shocks under it with it only being 2" off the ground... lol
