We got the old generation in NA, it was called the Ford Contour/Mercury Mystique. It was never terribly popular, but it wasn't rejected too too badly, but it wasn't good enough to come back for a second round.

Wink Tpye X Completely outperforms when put against the BMW! ! !

I have had the pleasure of test-driving the new Jag type X! A really good and sound car! The fact that people are testing it against the car that leads this particular sector. . The Audi A4, Says it all! However, It rocks me to think that you can compare a car with great heritage and proven pedigree that the Jag holds with a make of car that Pimps, drug dealers, thugs and any other number of low life drive. . The BMW 3 series. . . YAWN- BORING!

Please! The BMW has nothing that compares with such a great new car! The BMW has a reputation that people who are sales advisors will buy this car, whilst people who manage them will opt for the Audi! A driver’s car. Now you have the option for going with the proven class leader and drivers car – Audi A4, or opting for the new presence in the Jag, which has the driver appeal as well as the connoisseur effect.

Having said that, I never opted for the new Jag, I went for the new MG ZT! Which wipes the floor with the entire competition when comes to handling and performance! All for under £20 000! BMW’s comparative option is an M3, AND HOW MUCH S THAT?

Lee Moffatt – A proud new owner of a new MG ZT, yet a strong admirer of the X type!

sorry, but i couldnt disagree more with pretty much everything there
sure some pretty nasty people drive BMW's, but you can say that of any car company... lets not forget the kind of people who drive 80's Jags, eh? pimps, i hear you say? pimps in Bee Em's, or in crappy late 80's Jags? Jags me thinks.. Jag has only just got its act together, and still in terms of driver satisfaction it has nothing on BMW. The A4 a driver's car? I've never laughed so much in my life! the A4 is a very capable car all-round but is widely criticised for being a boring drive. EVERY Audi available today, no matter how competent, (because they pretty much all are) are pretty boring to drive. No character, and the driver feels left out. Compare this to BMW, whose 3-series is truly remarkable to drive, if not spectacularly fast in the 316 and 318 versions (but then again the base A4 and X-Type are pretty slow too).. besides, A4's are mostly FWD, which i wont even begin to compare to RWD... and the base X-type being FWD? A FWD Jag?!?!? Dont get me started..

dont get me wrong, i think the x-type is a good car, but not a match for the BM or Audi.

congrats on your ZT, v nice car, but not comparable to an M3 though, sorry

cheers,
jay

Yes I don´t know what´s going on with Audi, it seems they want to make the cars all very similar with no personality, from the introduction of the A6, the A4 looks just like that one but smaller, and the A8 in the front-end, not to mention the next A8: an A6 with a larger wheel base, how boringggg, wait, so the A8 is going to compit with the new VW Phaeton?, why would VW have a luxury car like that one, I would never buy a VW at a Mercedes price, ever!

I guess I am a little late to this thread, but I wanted to mention my car(a 1991) and my old car (a 1989) both had automatic headlights, so this isn't really a new feature. But it is a very good feature, I love it.:bandit:

Talking The X Type Rocks

I have had a look at the X-Type and believe that it has the credentials to become the class leader here in England anyway!

It looks far better than the current class leader, the A4. And does have an unmatched connoisseur appeal that other car manufactures can only dream about. The BMW equivalent seems to be for, as TVR_TUSCAN_TYPE_R puts it, for the lower class people who think they are something they are not! And I agree.

The fact that I purchased at great cost a 328ci is my flaw that I will rectify by purchasing a new Jaguar X Type as soon as possible. I test droved the x type and was blown away by its quality of build quality of engines quality of style and most importantly, quality of creature comforts. Something the BMW seems to lack as I can admit to. I have a very expensive car that has very little ‘extras’ and the interior looks dated even though it’s less than 6 months old!

Also I have noticed; people who come to my business who drive BMWs (lowly sales representatives usually) are absolutely dumb as! Yet when sales managers or work managers and the like who seem to own the A4 and more and more the X type, all seem to be educated! Has this been a anyone else’s finding?

The best way to see if a car sounds good enough is this (I saw this on a top gear programme some years ago and it has stuck in my mind ever since. . . . . .

“I own a successful business and a big 5 bed roomed house in the country side, I drive an Audi” - Doesn’t paint a picture of success does it

“I own a successful business and a big 5 bed roomed house in the country side, I drive an BMW” - Not bad, but every one drives a BMW!

“I own a successful business and a big 5 bed roomed house in the country side, I drive an Jaguar” - Gives the appearance of success like no other car etc. . . . . .

Enough Said! Give me an X type.

People never cease to amaze me... Back to the topic at hand. I think the X-Type is great car for its first year out. I think that it was a Bimmer magazine reviewer that said the X-Type is about 95% of the 3 series, just not quite there. The guy who is leading the X-Type effort used to be the #2 guy at BMW if I am not mistaken. I will find the article I was reading to confirm.

The X- type doesn´t needs to be any percentage of the 3 series, like if the BMW was the top of the class, give me a break. In all cases a Jag magazine could say that the 3 series is 60% of Jag then...

I realize its a subjective analysis. I was quoting it to help express my opinion. Most American car magazines do place the BMW at the top of the class. I have spent a considerable amount of time in the 330ci and 330i BMWs and IMHO BMW represents the "top of class". To be fair I have only been on two X-Type test drives so maybe more time spent will change my opinion.

That´s true, but then it didn´t existed the Jaguar X-type. Now with the Jag and Lexus, there´s multiple opinions in car magazines around the world.
