Well, it comes down to why kids modified Deuces in the fifties: Money. In the heyday of hot rodding, Duesenbergs, Offenhauser Indy cars, Appletons, Auburns, Packards, Mercers, and Stutzs were the "it" car. The youngster who didn't have one of those longed for similar performance and style, but could only afford a Model A Ford. SO, he bought an A-V8, started leafing through speed part catalogs, and welding and sanding and stripping the body until he had his own personalized sports car. Nowadays, the cheap, reasonably performing, reliable car is the Honda Civic. With its unique double-wishbone front suspension, advanced 1.6L DOHC four cylinder, and lightweight body, it's an ideal platform to begin bolting, bonding, and cutting to make one's own version of the "it" car, a Touring or GT style racer. The spirit is the same, Mad Z, it's just in a new form.
The problem comes in the fact that the body panels that a rodder uses can be had by a ricer as well. Thus, there is little to distinguish the cars until the driver plants his foot. Civics have had their place in competition. CRX's are right now the only modern cars that keep up with the Spitfires, Midgets, Sprites, Fiat X19's, Datsun 510's, that weirdo with the Chevette Scooter, and Porsche 914's at the SCCA Runoffs at Mid-Ohio each year. It's a good little car. Not huge on performance, but hey, the Deuce got eclipsed by road cars as soon as the manufacturers recognized a market. Then we got the Chevy small block, the Chrysler 300C, Plymouth Fury, Paxton Blown T-Birds, 409 Bel-Airs, Fairlane Thunderbolts, Super Duty Pontiacs, Max Wedge Plymouths..... that'll happen with impors too. And if you don't like imports, can I interest you in a Pontiac Solstice or Dodge Razor?

I am sorry if I mislead you. I never said I don't like imports. I should have explained myself better. I see the appeal in making a honda fast, however, I do not see the appeal of making a honda look fast and spending rediculous amounts of money doing so. and yes, there are a few (and I stress FEW) honda guys and all other 4cyl. fwd guys for that matter who actually care more about performance and do not feel the need to waste money on rice. I respect the honda driver who has less than 5 grand tied up in his project, however I laugh at the guy who has 15 grand invested in his honda no matter how fast it is. See what I'm getting at? some of these guys get so caught up in "whats hot" that they forget that it's still a honda and will always be a honda. (I keep saying honda because it's easier than saying 4cyl. fwd all the time)
But yes... I definately see the appeal of being proud of your work and being proud that you actually got a honda running descent 1/4 times, but some people just end up having the prettiest 17 sec. car at the track if you catch my drift.

And I'm sorry for sounding like a pompous jackass. In any case, rodding is rodding. Right? Whether SR20DET or Z-11, the name of the game is still go faster.

Octagon, you are dead right! Roddin is Roddin, plain and simple. If buddy wants to hop his Honda, let him go ahead... Different folks, different strokes...
As for my earlier post about the local scene, maybe it's just me out in the boonies here, but I don't see a lot of fast imports. In fact, I haven't seen one tuned Japanese car in town. Now, I'm not going to say import, because despite what every ricer believes, import also includes German, British, French and Italian cars. I have seen some pretty ballsy Porsches, we have a 993 TT, a couple 951s, a 993 C4... There is an AMG Benz too. There is a guy I know who has a rubber bumper MGB with a Ford 5.0 EFI motor in it, he's pretty fast. There are a few 3000GT/Stealths kickin around, a few Supras, quite a few RX7s(no FDs), lots of 240SX hatchbacks, and a couple Silvias. No one who has a really fast car, like the 993TT or the C4 drive them hard... The guy with the MGB is a regular at the drag strip, but he's a hotrodder so... The street racing scene in my town is all muscle. Occasionally a ricer shows up, there's one with a stripped out Civic(roll cage, painted on "race number"), he gets roasted pretty regularly, in fact, sometimes, when arguing the superiority of Hondas and FWD, he gets into trouble with the local good ol boys :toothless We mostly have early Fox body mustangs, 2nd and 3rd gen camaros(there is one 4th running 500hp all motor + gas), and a whole lot of cars like Malibus, Fairmonts, T-Birds, basic midsizers with smallblocks. Most of the cars are worth less than 10 grand, and that includes being built.

*has now regained conciousness*
Sorry about that. Purist backlash is a reflex. But you're right, import means everywhere outside of the states. I'm an import rodder, my car is British. My teammate, his car is a Nissan. He's an import rodder. The guy down the street with a 4th gen Camaro. He's an import rodder. Seriously. St. Therese, Quebec is where Camaros and Firebirds come from. According to the US registry, there is enough foreign content of materials and manufacturing in the car to classify it as an import. And for a wild twist of fate, anybody hopping up Honda Accords is a domestic rodder. Marysville, Ohio has been the home of Accord porduction since the mid-eighties. In fact, more Accords are exported to Japan than produced there. Spooky, isn't it? But in the long run, neither matters to the people who want to make their car handle better, accelerate faster, stop quicker, and eventually look better because the car is the real deal, not where it came from. (until you factor in Italian supercars.... that's a whole different story)

Hell, Canadians, Americans, we're just about the same, except for different government. We have better beer too, and whiskey... You got us on the cars though.

Bingo.
Chargers are by their very nature top end demons. They are acceleration, crusing, and top speed. It took the Mercedes-Benz C111 to beat Bobby Isaac's world closed sircuit speed record of 212.6mph (I might have that a bit off. I have to re-check, but it should be close) which was set in a 1969 Dodge Daytona Charger at Talladega. Now, if it was Eau Rouge instead of Sunset Strip, then a Charger is probably Seven bait. But off the line there is no contest. And for another bit of useless but interesting trivia.... Chargers also have history in sports car racing, namely, Le Mans. NASCAR driver Herschel McGriff drove a Hemi powered 1972 Dodge Charger sponsored by Olympia Beer at Le Mans in 1972. He finished 11th and frightened many people.

I see a lot of shit being thrown around in this thread, and looks like most of it comes right out of the bull.

Supras, however are definitely designed for drag and only drag, since I hear they can go up to 600 hp on stock internals. BTW, when you say Street Racers, Im assuming you mean drag racing and not mountain racing.
