5th gen

i think crx is right. I have a stock (bodied) SH, and I love it. My friend bought a 4th gen, and i honestly didnt think it looked good till it was kitted, lowered, and painted. And now it looks ricey!

5th gen all da way. 4th kinda looks like its got a goofy grin on its face. heh

4th gen all the way I dont know what they where think when they made the lights for the 5th gens. Thats my biggest reason why I didnt get a 5th gen, kinda makes them look like bugs. Sorta like the tail lights for allero's.

You shouldn't be so quick to judge. I go to the strip regularly and watch 5th gen preludes run high 15s and low 16s all the time. I have a stock h23 in my 93 prelude (when I say stock, I mean stock, no I/H/E, nothing.) Anyhow, Last time out to the strip I ran:

At 21.19:

R/T .538
60' 2.312
330 6.500
1/8 [email protected]
1000 12.849
1/4 [email protected]

At 22.15:

R/T .474 (I jumped the gun a little bit, oh well.)
60' 2.301
330 6.488
1/8 [email protected]
1000 12.768
1/4 [email protected]

Granted, these numbers aren't anything spectacular, but, for a stock 160bhp motor, they're certainly not bad, and I've beaten more than my share of "faster" cars. I'm not disputing that the 5th gen preludes are faster than his car, I'm just saying driver error is easily worth a second in a race.

One more thing:

Oh, and, of course, to stay on topic, I think Edmunds.com's Associate editor Liz Kim described the 5th gen prelude best:
"Yes, it's an aged design. No, the interior hasn't been updated since wearing high-tops with denim miniskirts was cool. Yes, it's an ugly piece of machinery. But I still couldn't help but feel affectionate toward the Prelude and its abilities. It does everything well; if not exceedingly, then with more than enough competence. "

let me debate that. i think the 5th gen prelude has aged quite gracefully in its 5 year life span. and in my own opinion, i think it has aged better than most other cars, including hondas. the only exceptions among honda i can think of are the integra and nsx which kept the same design year after year yet remained modern-looking the whole time.

dont' confuse an outdated design with a familiar design. throughout the last gen integra, everyone recognized it, familiar with it, but no one discounted it as out-of-date up until the very end. pretty impressive if you ask me. most cars look "old" after only a couple years out. i think the 5th gen prelude, and hondas in general, age better than most anything else on the road. out of the factory they may seem conservative, bland and boring. and they are. but it's a smart marketing move. coz 4 or 5 years down the line, the car will still look fresher than other cars out there.

del, while your response was great, and I agree with the statement about hondas in general, I think the same aging concept can be applied to the fourth generation prelude. I had a friend (huge BMW fan, to let you know of his tastes) comment on my car the other day, saying that this design of the fourth gen is timeless. he said, if the 4g lude wasn't produced when it was, and rolled off the assembly line tomorrow, it would still look like a newly designed car. he isn't the only person that has said that to me either.

i personally think honda stepped back in their design fron the 4g to the 5g, especially in the interior, but it still works, and works good. the 5g is more technologically superior to the 4g, but i believe the 4g has a more unique aesthetic appeal to it. different strokes for different folks though. it's all a matter of opinion.

I can look at my lude from any direction and see beauty bursting from the body panels. especially the top down on the hood.. ::drools like homer simpson:: I am sure this is the case for most car enthusiasts though.

while hondas might seem to be out of date, their design is timeless (although some of the 80s model hondas are... sub par.. at least the majority of them are not ending up looking like stealth fighters with the hard lines and sharp edges. honda does incorporate this style moderately (S2k), but not so much as to make it look like a new celica. in any case, I know I will be a honda owner for life, and I look forward to what is to come.. 6g prelude someday?

I too am partial to the 4g preludes. The first one that I can remember seeing was a '92, and it was love at first sight. That 92 was what sparked my interest in cars. Granted, a 4g prelude stock bodied I think looks somehow incomplete, but put any kind of body kit on it, from a plainly styled straight drop to one of the curvy or sharp or anything fancy kits, and there is nothing to compare. The 4g body is so versatile, it looks good with anything, and there are virtually limitless possibilities for design. When I got my 93, they also had a 2000 on the lot, but I still chose the 93. I don't like what they did to the rear on the 5g preludes. It's too blocky. I like my nice curvy and yes "fat" rear end. Also, someone mentioned that the 4g looks like it has a goofy grin, all I can say is compare it to the dodge neon or the VW bug and tell me that it's still a goofy grin. I see it as more of a smirk "Yes, I can eat you in a heartbeat... but will I? We'll see"

I wouldn't go as far as you never see a riced out 5g, I have seen more than you can count. and where you get 75% of 4gs are riced out?? I have a 5th gen and more than happy with it but the 4th gen is also a great car. I voted for the 5g only cause I owned one but at the end you still got a prelude.

look at this beauty

well, i own a 5th gen type-SH.....the only reason i bought a prelude is because i have six friends whom all drive 4th gen preludes......that is why i decided to buy a prelude myself. To me, 4th gen and 5th gen are both unique and special....(i am a die-hard prelude fan) there is no way i can tell you which one is better because they are both great cars that other cars just cant match. btw, i just went to the extremeautofest car show today in pheonix........got a pic of a 4th gen prelude....unbelievable.....i will post the pic as soon as i get it developed......anyhow, in conclusion, both 4th and 5th gen rules....no need for this poll......PRELUDE is the ONE and ONLY car that should never be compared to any others.
