I had this happen after going through several starts, and in one of my mustangs it happened when I stored it for 9 months without driving it... it vanished under load, and when engaged in drive, got loud when put it in neutral or reverse, and kept coming back as I was decelerating (automatic with shift kit) using the transmission as a brake. It IS the starter, and the way it sits in it's mounts that is a problem. Sometimes after a starter/solenoid malfunction where the starter engages, this is an annoying problem because something is bent. There was also a round ring clip that went missing on the shaft the engagement gear on the starter slides back and forth on, causing the started to just rub a touch to the flexplate/flywheel. Problem went away when I installed a Proform Starter (260 ft/lbs starting torque, aftermarket, MUCH better than original or original reman.)
