Re: this web side is dead

Hope all went well this past week Mark. I know you've been busy. Did you make it to the Irvine Convention? I've seen the pictures and it was a pretty good show, but smaller than normal.

Re: this web side is dead

I CAN"T BELIEVE THIS!!!!

Since this thread has involved quite a bit of discussion about attempting the proper use of the English language. I had to relate this. Several of my grandkids were dropped off this afternoon at the house after school today. This is a regular occurance on Mondays. They immediately start on homework when they get here. Not my rule, their moms. They hate it because before I sign off on anything they have to answer questions. Math is checked. Spelling is checked. And not only do they have to be able to spell it they have to know what it means. Not mom's rule, mine. Today I had to skim two books that the two youngest were reading. One is in the 1st Grade the other the 3rd. The books were Junie B. Jones books. I could not believe the errors in grammer that these books endorse. I can't recall all of the abuses to the English language. But two stuck out so badly they still hurt my brain. I must paraphrase as I can't recall verbatum. One said something like "I winned my grandpa playing Tic Tac Toad." The other said, "I'm the bestest hopper..." If kids see this kind of misuse of verbage in books without being told its incorrect. Is it a small wonder they can't express themselves any better when they grow up?

I'm noticing it more and more in mainstream publications from magazines and newspapers to model kit instructions. Some is due to translation errors as in the past on the model instructions. But some people who use, (rely on), spell check don't even notice how corrupted and wrong it can be, let alone know what is correct. The spell check in AOL is awful, it tries to convert my English and restructure my sentences to ebonics. This is another way people who are trying to learn are being misguided. Sadly, it is what we have to live with. I'm afraid it will get worse before it gets better... - Mark

Re: this web side is dead

I know am getting off the subject of why this site is dead and I apologize. But this does have some bearing on the matter. When I have to decifer what someone is trying to say; I usually don't. Another example that I only address on Mondays was with the oldest granddaughter. Actually the first three are from my daughter's, husband's previous marrage. Until they ran into us, education wasn't very high on the "to-do" list. The problem I've also noticed is, if the kids don't know a word they skip it!!! Like it's in the way. The 4th grader couldn't pronounce "represent." When she couldn't pronounce it after trying over and over she looked at me and said, "I don't think that is a word.... The 1st grader is reading the same books the 3rd grader is reading and has better math skills. Is this because my daughter has been there as a tutor since he started school? I firmly believe education should be continued at home. Though this isn't a firm case study; it does give support to that theory.

Nice to see somebody with the mature attitude. This is a close fit to the profile we were discussing that turns people away.

There is an AF policy that you need to spell "legibly". The reason behind the unwritten rule is because this is an international website and for many English is not their native tongue.

Your comment was adequately noted. Just watch what you post from now on, and think before you speak.
