Re: 2.8L to 305 swap??

ok, i pretty much have mt 2.8L out, does anyone know if the driveshaft is the same length as a the v8? It should be because the tranny crossmember must be the same. Just trying to find all the potential problems before hand.

V8 and V6 makes no difference it is the tranny that makes the difference. There are two different D/L depending on which tranny Metric200 or 200r4. If your car has a 700r4 why would you be concerned of driveline length you would just pull the engine out, bolt in new mounts and put the v8 in. Now if your using a TH350 the driveline is probably going to be about three inches too short measure the length of the 4spd that was/is in the car from the end of the tailshaft to the front of the bellhousing it should measure about 30" or so and the TH350 will probably measure about 27" or so, if this is the case the driveline out of the '81 should fit perfect, if I remember right my stock D/L was to short, so I got one out of an '80 w/TH350 & a 305 and it worked perfect. The crossmember will work but you need a bracket if your putting the TH350 in, you will also need the adapter to mount the torque arm to the tranny(the tranny mount bracket comes in this kit).

Re: 2.8L to 305 swap??

The 305 has the turbo350 with it, so it would be easier to put the whole thing in, i was just wondering if the shaft was the same length. The tranny in it has a removable end piece where the shaft goes in and where the torque arm bolts up. Does the turbo 350 have the same set up? I don't have the engine home yet, or i would measure and check everything myself.

The tailshaft on the TH350 will be shorter than the 4spd and does not have mounts for a torque arm. It will go on but the output shaft on the tranny will not stick out and is not advisable to use it that way, you will probably need the driveline out of the '81 and also need to order a B&M torque arm adapter kit from summit racing or yearone(unless you want to do some serious fabrication). The adapter is about $80 and it will solve all your problems, make sure you put the adapter on b4 tranny goes in. Some drivelines will work but I wouldn't bet on it(since TH350's are shorter than 4spd's).

Re: 2.8L to 305 swap??

so my best bet would be to use the 7004r if at all possible, and then the shaft and torque arm will work out. But if not i need the adapter, which from the looksof the one on ebay wouldn't take much to make using the old one.

You will need the harness/electronics to run the tranny, I think they're $100+ haven't checked Ebay and i'm not sure how you would run the harness to the tranny through the ECU after a swap, sure it's possible though, but ultimately will save the rear end problems and give you O.D.

Re: 2.8L to 305 swap??

how much electronics can a carbrated 305 have? Just the sensor isn't it?. My cars not fuel injected, so it shouldn't be that much of a problem

It doesn't matter what electronics there are for your 305 it matters that ALL 700r4's use a lockup converter, and a controller must be used to operate the trans properly. If your running a carb'd motor you will need a L/U controller. 700r4's don't run on a vacuum kickdown like th350's, if your going through the trouble to put a 700r4 in I would look around and see what you can get your hands on a 4L60 for. I built the 5.7(5.9L when I was done) in my '93 C1500 a year or so before i sold it and it put down 461ft. lbs and 413Hp Net and I never did a damn thing to that tranny.

Re: 2.8L to 305 swap??

I'm going for whatever is easiest and cheapest. I have both trannys sio i just need the pros and cons of each and what i'll need to use each.

Re: 2.8L to 305 swap??

Your not gonna make much power if you leave the motor alone so done worry about that. If the 700 has been rebuilt not to long ago and the th350 has just been sitting around then i would go with the 700. With the th350 you have a little bit better acceloration but worse gas mileage. Like someone said not to long ago, the 700r4 is a great transmission. I have heard bad things about earlier versions of that tranny but maybe with the rebuild whatever problems it might of had from the factory have been eliminated.

Re: 2.8L to 305 swap??

I'm getting a cam and headers for the 305 brfore it goes in and then more as i go along. Does anyone have a link where i can buy a torque arm adaptor? I can't seem to find one. Or does anyone have one for sale? Or a driveshaft from an 80-81?

Re: 2.8L to 305 swap??

I just bought the driveshaft from the 81 my 305 came out of for $20. I sat it beside the one out of my 84 and it looks to be almost 6" longer. Maybe less. Will this work with the th350 when i put it in? is it the same length to the rear end as the 81 was?
