Re: honda lovers. warning this may piss some people off lol
Not all v-8 chevys are heavy.Mine weighs 3200 lbs with me in it..I would venture to say it steers just as good as any import as it has quick ratio steering, and way big stabalizers. Most imports are rated at higher RPM than most American V-8's,wich makes people think they are stronger. My engine original was 375Hp@3200rpm's back in 1970.Its a 350cid.My block is still in tip top shape, even better than it was original, since its bored, and has bigger heads and stuff. modded out,it can take the heat of 7k rpm's,all day long.My engine block turns 35 years old august 05'.Durability is more important to me.I somtimes put my 275-65-15 tires all the way around, and go mudding and rail road jumping with it.It never gives me a problem, and has just as much HP per cid,as injected engines. The advantage=cheaper to build, lasts A LOT longer, and has heritage.Im not dissing on imports, just saying not all american cars are heavy and hard to steer. Some of us just like to have a big body car,in cause a bad accident or somthing happens.

Re: honda lovers. warning this may piss some people off lol
except i dont agree with cheaper to build part. building both import and domestic engines cost alot. i remember some magazines had a challenge between themselves, and a chevelle won over the imports(had the best skidpad number also!)...

Re: honda lovers. warning this may piss some people off lol
I work at a shop,so labor is free...it simply costs more per part, and takes longer to do basic routine maintanence on most imports. At 60 or more dollars an hour for a mechanic, versus how long it lasts, and how much time it takes to do each project, you will lose out with an import.I dont see the point of owning a car that has low crash test scores, more frequent and more costly maintanence, higher insurance, with more possible scenarios to leave you stranded on the side of the road, cause one of the 50 sensors desides to take a dump on you at the most inconvienient time possible..Sure i have a high gas bill, but i like the gas pump, cause thats when people droll over my car the most

Re: honda lovers. warning this may piss some people off lol
Sorry man but you're highly misinformed. With something like a VW, then yes it will be more expensive and there is a lot more work to be done by a mechanic to get something done. But with a Honda, they're just about the easiest cars to work on (with a few exceptions). And Honda parts are cheap, as long as you don't get them directly from a Honda dealership. When I had my Olds, I had to take it to a shop to even get my spark plugs changed, because they were far down in back of the motor. Now with my Civic, they plugs and everything else is right there easy to get to. I've had my car for over a year now, and have never had a problem with it, other than having to change my spark plugs when my motor was doging out (when I changed them they were the original plugs; that's 10yr old plugs and were still almost runnning). Now my Olds on the other hand, I had problems with it every month. My brake calipers would constantly screw up and destroy my outer brake pads. My fuel filter and fuel pump would go to crap every 2 or 3 months. My springs and shocks were destroyed (the shocks broke thru the body of the frame and were floating). And guess how much new shocks, springs, and the repair of the hole cost me? $2,000, now if this thing happened to my Honda it'd cost $900 or less and I'd be getting far better springs and shocks installed. If Hondas weren't so easy to work on, reliable, and had cheap parts available; do you really think so many people would own them? Hondas and Toyotas are incredibly reliable, that's why they are 2 of the top selling car manufacturers in the US (Toyota being #1 for the past few years). And as for insurance, it all depends on what 2 cars you're comparing. Sure an older american car will be cheaper to insure compared to a late '90's-early '00's import. But I know that when I had my '90 Olds Cutlass Supreme the insurance was $650 for 6 months, and now with my '94 Honda Civic CX it's $400 for 6 Months.
So there are just too many variable to think about. My personal experience tells me the exact opposite of what you've said. Not to say that you're completely wrong, but when it comes to Hondas and Toyotas as imports then you are incorrect. When I was younger I had people tell me all the time, exactly what you said. But fortunately I've found it to be completely incorrect. Unless you've actually owned a Honda/Acura (and I'm not talking about a '91 or older) then you've just been told this stuff by others, and they don't know what they're talking about. Like I said earlier, if you're refering to a VW then that's a whole different story. I know a few people who work at VW dealerships as mechanics, and I've seen friends working on them. They are absolutely a pain to work on and the parts are insanely expensive. But not all import cars are like that at all. I don't mean to insult you or anything like that (and I hope you don't take it that way), I just want to let you know the truth. And this is why a lot of american car owners buy Hondas as winter cars, because of their well known reliability and inexpensiveness to maintain. |

Re: honda lovers. warning this may piss some people off lol
My nichols chiltons book tells me exactly what time a certified mechanic takes to replace any part on any car period. And hondas arent the easiest to work on by a long shot, unless your a contorsionist,or a gremlin. And another thing,i wouldnt go to any other place for parts other than a dealership.,because for one,i like dealer warrenties, and two, parts stores carry junk, that will fail, like those cheap ass borg warner replacement fuel pumps. Its way cheaper to get a high performance quality part for a 350/350 setup, and cheaper for labor on putting it on,i dont care what you think.I dont go for some cheap auto zone junk remedy that barely passes an inspection.Maybe your olds failed cause it was a rust bucket, and you bought some get-me-by parts, instead of going with a OEM factory replacement part

Re: honda lovers. warning this may piss some people off lol
Those books that tell how many hours it take to do a job aren't exact, not by a long shot. My friend who works at Mitsubish and another who works at VW talk about the books all the time and how they get paid for the amount of hours in the book, yet get the job done hours quicker than the book states. Just because it says it takes a certain amount of time, doesn't mean it will; and you should know that. When I said that you can get parts cheaper by not going to the dealership, I didn't mean aftermarket parts. There are tons of sites online that sell OE parts for far cheaper than the dealerships. I agree that most parts from auto parts stores are completely garbage. And not every dealership even charges the same price. And my olds wasn't a rust bucket at all, it was very clean because it was a stored car until I got it. Driven by 1 owner, an old man from Penn, where they don't use salt on the roads in the winter time (i'm from NY so I know all about salt on the roads in winter). When it ran and braked correctly, it ran like a champ. But 6 months after I had it, it was 1 problem after the other. And that was the same way with my parents cars; dodge caravan, dodge omni, plymoth reliant, buick century. And honestly I don't know what fuel pumps were put it, because I didn't do the work myself. So it could have infact been sh*tty parts used. But all I know is that my Civic is far easier to work on that any american car I've owned, my family has owned, and friends have owned. That doesn't mean that every american car is hard to work on, but from my experience and the experience of every one I know it has been. I'm not trying to say that all american cars are bad and that all import cars are great, because that would be completely ignorant and untrue to say. I've just never seen any american car that has been as easy or as inexpensive to work on than my Honda.

Re: honda lovers. warning this may piss some people off lol
it doesnt matter how long it takes really, cause people get charged what the book says most of the time.If the book is way off and it takes me over an hour less time, somtimes i give the customer a pardon on some of the cost, but if it takes longer than the book says,Im just S.O.L.Hondas look easy, but somtimes they are a true pain in the hind quarters.Like the water pumps for example. Its right there, seems like you can just pick them off,but they still end up taking like four hours, even tho the book calls for less time.Somtimes the book says 30 minutes ,and it takes three hours, and somtimes it says hours, when it takes minutes. The book does lie i will give you that, but it eventually balances out,one its lied to you about 3000 times.A geo metro is easier and cheaper than your car tho.But i feel the same way about geos that i do hondas.too little for my family, and too slow for me lol

Re: honda lovers. warning this may piss some people off lol
honda's are easy.. the engines are relatively simple aside from the vtec units.. but the most that goes wrong is low oil pressure, or a gasket that needs to be replaced in the unit.. and as for the dealership... it's not worth it.. you can get the same if not better part for less.. I went to the dealership and asked for a set of exhause gaskets, and compression rings for the DC sports exhaust on my accord, and they quote me $60 for the header gasket, and $20 for a set of 2 compression rings.. I went to the local Napa and got both the header gasket, and the rings for $26... saved myself $50 and a 2 hour drive to the honda dealership. same thing when I wanted to replace the factory cassette deck for a factory CD deck.. quoted me $400 for a factory CD deck.. I went on Ebay and got one for $120. replacement parts for honda's are CHEAP! and you have to know what to look for.. dealerships will charge and arm and a leg.. I will ahve to say though, I have not been impressed with any of my friends DSM autos... friends have had pontiacs, fords, jeeps, and GMC.. neither have impressed me at all... most have been bringing their cars back to the dealership for warranty repairs, or premature wear/breakdown.. not instilling any faith in their products in my eye.. while I beat on my honda, and have NO problems whatsoever.. only problem I had was last month I thought the clutch was going... but checked the pedal, and noticed it was sticking.. got some lube, and it's all set.. car is going in to a dealership next month for a onceover, and tuneup at 90,000+ miles... usual timing belt, serpentine, and a set of new spark plugs..

i dont even want to read the article just by reading you guys' reactions about it makes me angry. Answer me this.... why do the people with V6s and V8s always rag on us 4 cyl. IF (and i mean "IF") they really thought their cars were so much better why do they always feel like they need to prove something to us 4cyl guys? I think they just have penis compensations. heh Big engines small penises

oh boy a comedian, isnt this nice.I *rag* on four bangers cause they suck and are slow unless you hammer it to the floor. And on this particular post, all i have seen until i said somthing,is people poking fun at v-8 american cars. Its as simple as this<my engine is twice the motor of a 4 banger...I own a 2000 zx2,wich has a 2.0 5 speed setup, and it was rated the fastest car for the money the year it was manufactured. Its still slow and stupid.Nice of you to be thinking about my pecker tho,you wierdo
