technically, i belive, it's 101 engine hp, 96 to the wheels, rated from the factory. as little as the car weighs, though, it's STILL fun to drive!

Clutch has to be engaged, that's why I'm wondering if it will work in reverse.

In theory it should, IF you're moving at over 15mph (or whatever it is, i forgot) by the time you hit vtec point (5k for my car) in reverse.

Other than that, it seems as if all the other requirements to engage are met.

speeds v. RPM's are different in reverse than if the forward gears.

i would have to hit.
the only way it wouldn't is if honda slipped in some computer chip somewhere that would not set the vtec off.

i think that's the crux of this entire thread, seing as mechanically speaking, the engine doesn't know if the car is in forward or reverse. the only way the vtec WOULDN'T engage in reverse, therefore, is if there was a command from the ECU not to...

The kick of VTEC in reverse will probably scare you, cause the car to jerk, and cause you to loose control and J-turn the car. If anyone tries it, do it in a VERYYYY LARGE EMPTY parking lot. Ive driven in reverse through a big ass neighborhood with many turns at a pretty fast speed to the point to where you couldnt hear the whine of the reverse gear anymore. It was godly high pitched. These people were laughing at the whine of my car as I was slowing down. I'm good at it but am afraid of trying it on my GSR to the point of engaging VTEC.

luike the guy below you said, oil pressure activates it, but there are other factoprs the ECU monitors before it TELLS it to activate and Im sue the car will know you are in reverse, I mean its gotta know somehow for your back up lights to come on so maybe the ECU monitors that circuit if it needs to know, or maybe it just knows cuz the VSS is spinning in reverse. so ythe factors may be there to activate it but my guess is for safety purposes honda disabled it in reverse. I mean they had to figure one day some bonehead wioll try and hit it in reverse, I know Id go try right now if I had a car with VTEC. but when it hits I bet you lose control, man its touchy driving in reverse at hgih speds, not sure how fast youd be going in a honda at VTEC in reverse, but in my 95 mustang I had a while back I got going damn near 40 in reverse but then the front end started to waive a bit and I tried correcting it but as anyone whos done it knows its damn near impossible because a TINY TINY correction sends you shooting the other way so I ended up in a ditch backwards. the momentum shot me right back out forwards though and only visible daMAGE WAs some paint chips and a hole in the rear bumper. when you looked underneath that ws as a different story though.
