also, are the JWT camshafts a must if you are going to go that deep in the engine anyways?
The different pistons sizes are listed as .02 and .04 overbore. The stock cylinders are bored a certain size. When you rebuild an engine block you bore a little bigger to get the cylinder bore straight again and clean up the walls from the previous piston rings. In your case and mine I would assume this is the first time they are being rebuilt so just a .02 overbore and thus a .02 oversized piston is required. If its already been rebuilt (and thus rebored) then the .04 would probably be the way to go.

As for camshafts, well you're not going to rebuild the entire engine with the strength to go out to insane power then not go the little extra distance to make another 30-50 rwhp now are you? You don't have to do them but they will add a good deal of power. And with cams comes the need for valve springs but if you aren't going for really huge power, you won't need the race spec valves and dual coil springs you mentioned. That is for when you get into max power cars, like Z1s 800rwhp Peacemaker and Wagz's 744rwhp ride. If you are shooting for the mid level turbo upgrade area, 450-600 rwhp-ish, then JWTs 400R and 400R+ (what I'm getting) are about the area you want to be. Z1 has some of their own cams, check around for what people think of them. Figure another $1000-1500 or so depending on what set you go with and who makes them, thats with springs included. I got mine from ConceptZ and the springs direct from JWT and all told it was $980 for the cams and $360 for the springs (thats with some stiffer variable cam timing springs that are used to keep the noise down when the variable timing kicks in when running high lift cams). I swear if anyone posts a link where I could have gotten them marginally cheaper I will destroy you all.

Anyway, if you are going to do all this you are going to want to upgrade the turbos as well, which in this case probably means you're looking at JWT 530BB, HKS GT2530s, or GReddy TD-05s. Power Enterprises 1420s are also a good choice for this range but as they are less popular there are fewer examples of what they are capable of, they look like kickass units, just not enough available info. Search TwinTurbo.net for owner reviews and comparisons. But beware, the boards there are somewhat skewed in favor the GT2530s. Figure 530BBs and GT2530s to be more or less equal, 530BBs leaning towards quicker spool and GT2530s towards power. TD-05s are better on the power side, of course at the cost of spool up. The interesting part is that the GT2530 and TD-05 kits both sell for a little over $4000, though if you look hard enough some people sell them for $3800ish. Whereas the 530BBs are about $2800. BE VERY CAREFUL! There is alot of cases where one car is more or less stock with a given turbo making X rwhp and the same turbo in another car is making X+70rwhp. Do alot of research on this. You have alot of time to think about it so call around, email some people, this is pretty much what I've been doing for the last couple of months. Proper turbo selection can make or break your car. Z1 also has a line of turbo upgrades however the reviews and experiences with them are a little more limited.

Going beyond about the 575-600rwhp mark gets you into alot more changes, including fuel pump, transmission work, alot of engine machining...in others, big power and big money.

i meant 2005. i also have been looking at turbos upgrades for sometime. im leaning towards the 530BB's more or less. power and price seem to be right on target. thanks for all the info on the boring process of the engine and what not. it is alot of help and i am learning more and more everyday. the only problem i have is i dont know want like an identical set-up to somebody else but my choices are limited on the z because the aftermarket is limited to only a few companies when you start getting into higher numbers. we will have to see. i am not too concerned right now. i have some other things i need to be worrying about. once again. thanks for the info broke.

Re: 300ZX Twin Turbo vs. Supra Twin Turbo

I'm seriously considering making the Z31T my modded daily driver and getting a Z32TT as a proj car...I'm probably going to have a few options in a few months or so...gunna cross that bridge when I get there.

Both engines are EXTREMELY over engineered. Both engines are incredible producers. I tend to think that the 2JZ-GTE is a bit easier and cost effective to coax power out of than the VG30DETT, but the Z looks a LOT better. It's almost a toss up...until you notice that you can find a good condition Z32TT for a third of the price of a MKIV...

i live in kansas, we don't get snow, we get ICE. it sucks big time. we usually get about 3 big ice storms per winter.

oh ok...well better than here. although the last couple years have been pretty calm. we usually get about 5 big storms that bring about 8 inches of snow. not exactly rear wheel driving conditions but less HP makes it a hell of alot easier.

Um...might want to brush that "snow" off your nose.

Anyway, K3, beware, you can go insane trying to find the right turbo. I was already well off my collective nut so no real harm was done here but for someone who still has atleast some of their wits about them, look out. And since you are probably looking at 10-15k to do a really nice upgrade you might want to consider holding that project until winter 2005 when you aren't going to want to be driving your car in the summer. And really, just waiting for parts and machine work can take months sometimes. I started getting this all together in May right after my engine blew, really nailed down the plan at the end of July and began ordering stuff begining of September. The engine work will take atleast til Decemeber, but by the time its done I'll have the money to order the rest of the bolt on pieces (exhaust, turbos etc) and drop the motor in and fire it up. Then by the time I've broken the engine in I'll have the rest of the parts needed to really get into the crazy hp range (namely the intercoolers, expensive items that can wait until after the car is running). Put the last few parts on then proceed to run like crazy. So you can see how it sucks if you are doing a project as money comes. So if I were you, I would gather parts and money all next year so you only have a couple of months next winter when your car is in pieces. All the parts are there, you don't have to wait on anything but the machining and you can proceed alot faster.

Re: 300ZX Twin Turbo vs. Supra Twin Turbo

you might even want to try accumulating parts as you get closer to tear down time, that way you're not dropping like 10k at one time, and that way if something else comes up along the way and you want to change your plans, it'll be easier to do rather than having to pull stuff off the car and try and return/sell it used. plus, the more parts that accumulate on your mantle, the more you can look at it and get all giddy.

Re: 300ZX Twin Turbo vs. Supra Twin Turbo

I'm still in the "changes mind every few days" stage. One day, I want to get a 5th gen prelude for a dd and ship the Z31 to SGP...next day, I'll be leaning toward keeping the Z31 as a modded dd and finding a good Z32...slightly more expensive option, but possibly doable.

I basically have a few possible options for DD coming up which leaves the "project" car TBA...

Possible DD options:
Current Z31
5th gen lude...very likely.
N/A Z31...very likely.
Neon SRT-4 (which would be pretty cool, but it's by far the most costly option and I'd probably get the urge to fiddle with it which is not it's intended purpose...in other words...probably not going to happen)
Scion TC...having an uncle that works for Toyota COULD come in handy...however...this is not the cheapest option, but it would help me to fix my credit.

Proj car possible options:

Z32TT...find one for around 10-15K...let the good times roll...
Ship the current Z31 off...most likely option.

The way it's lookin now is this: Lease a 5th gen lude...not very expensive, reliable, I love the look of them, won't kill me on ins (probably would take the Z31 off my ins until it's done), and it would help me to fix my credit. Then, I'd save up some fundage and ship/take the Z31T to SGP for a rebuild. All in all, it'll probably take 6 mo. to a year...something like that.

Well frankly that engine can be found in everything from the 350Z to SUVs to minivans. I don't think thats all that cool but it works great and helps keep the cost of the Z down, an important part of Z-ness. Also, most of the Japanese emissions laws passed for the past decade have been pretty much designed to elimate turbos.
